Made my decidedly average Nexus 7 case into a smart case tonight.
Materials: 1 grade N38SH 1/4"x1/16th" neodymium magnet, blue-tac, super glue, x-acto knife, cover magnet.
Step 1: determine where the "smart spot" was. Put blue-tac on magnet while it was in place and closed the cover so it would stick in the spot it needed to be mounted.
Step 2: cut out hole for the rare earth magnet. This was really hard actually. This material is tough.
Step 3: glued a really flat fridge magnet onto the cover to conceal the hole. This could have been anything, but this magnet is thin and strong and I like the Current, so cool.
Step 4: glued the rare-earth magnet into the hole.
Step 5: Profit!

Miniature modeling and painting skills and material came in handy.

  1. I gave up on the official case.  It's slim, but otherwise stinks.  I picked up this Moko case:

...on Amazon and love it.  A little more bulk, but smart, standable, and nice looking.  And the bulk helps pad it.

That said, nice job of redeeming the official case!

  2. Thanks. The offical case is for sure not worth $20. That case you linked is sweet, but I like how slim this one is and the material. If it was a smart case and actually, you know, SEALED when it closed I'd be a happy camper.

And I kind of outsmarted myself. The magnet is so strong that when I fold the cover all the way around...the screen shuts off.

  3. Don't feel too bad.  I've read other smart covers on Amazon have had the same problem with shutting off when folded back (mine has not, nor has anyone who's reviewed it reported it on this case).

Not smart and not standable was annoying, but the fact that the official case didn't even CLOSE sealed the deal in me replacing it.

I'd like to get a case that fits the N7 as tightly as the official one (but with power/volume cutouts...  another official case failing), but with a smart, standable cover flap.  I'll be keeping an eye on Amazon.  I'm sure more cases will come out as manufacturers have the time to come up with them.

  4. None of the tablet cases are any good.  I ended up getting a fake leather one for my Asus EE Pad on Amazon for $11 and finding this really cool ipad stand at 5 below (a fancy dollar store in case you dont have them in MN).  The stand us completely adjustable and will hold any tablet or nascar collectable plate.  It holds my tablet in portrate (or landscape) which almost no cover does.  The only problem is that the case does not have a hole to charge the case when closed.  Now where did that pesky x-acto knife go...
