In his book Lithographia Helvetica from 1726, Johann Jakob Scheuchzer described a Miocene fossil found in Oeningen asHomo diluvii testis (Latin: Man, a witness of the Deluge), believing it to be the remains of a human that drowned in the biblicalDeluge. The fossil was about 1 m (3 ft) long, lacked its tail and hind legs, and could thus be interpreted as showing some resemblance to the remains of a violently trampled human child. Jesus Christ, that's terrifying. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrias_scheuchzeri #rollforinitiative

The frequency of the Basilisk depends on what food it has been provided: None-common, bag of Doritos-rare, large pepperoni-very rare. This is a video of a predatory avian theropod dinosaur eating a small mammal. This exact scene played out 100 million years ago. Birds are terrifying. #rollforinitiative   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_P1GA-rOYo

We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

Image
We’re gonna need a bigger boat. It’s been a few days since I shared a fossil pic. Time to remedy that.  This is Xiphactinus a giant freakin’ prehistoric fish mean enough to swallow ichthyosaurs whole, and tangle with mosasaurs. If you’d gone fishing in the interior North American sea 65 million years ago, one of these things probably would have eaten you. Because Xiphactinus don’t care.  This one is at the North Dakota Heritage Center. There’s an in situ specimen at the Science Museum of Minnesota, but that one doesn’t have the menace this one does. It is amusing to me that many have been found in Kansas, a state that has repeatedly tried to get creationism into the classroom. Kansas is lousy with marine fossils. There’s not a much better place to feel “deep time” than a landlocked plain that used to be underwater. These will appear in Riders of the Purple Lotus because they’re too cool not to include. So #rollforinitiative  and hope you've got a ring of free action and a poti...

I’m bored, so here’s a weird dinosaur for you.

I’m bored, so here’s a weird dinosaur for you. Nigersaurus’s head is shaped like a vacuum cleaner. This straight row of tiny teeth never stops replacing itself. You can see how many are waiting their turn to rotate to the front in one of the pics. I imagine these things just never stopped browsing. Head down and eating all the time. No need to #rollforinitiative  I don't think. It's too busy eating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigersaurus

Today I learned that male elephant seals can bite each other so viciously that they’ve evolved a “chest shield” of hardened skin to protect themselves. So here’s a real case of an animal who’s AC differs depending on where you attack it. #andnowyouknow   #rollforinitiative   #horrifyingnature

More Mary Anning for her birthday.

Image
More Mary Anning for her birthday. This is the Ichthyosaurus species, Temnodontosaurus, she and her brother discovered. It was not the first ever found, but it was the first ever seriously studied. Of course no one writing papers on it ever mentioned who had collected it and meticulously prepared the fossil. The only person worth mentioning was the rich lord who bought it from Anning. This thing was 40 feet long. Totally worthy of a #rollforinitiative . Another fun fact, Mary Anning was the first one to suggest that the fossilized masses of fish bones found in the abdomen of ichthyosauruses were actually fossilized shit. Coprolites. It’s serendipitous that I just learned that before Mary discovered what they really were, they were called bezoar stones. Abby and I just read the part of Harry Potter where Professor Snape asks Harry what a bezoar was. They were traditionally thought to counteract poison. It is so amusing to me to imagine some old-timey lord dropping a hunk of fossilized...

Here’s another prehistoric antagonist for you.

Image
Here’s another prehistoric antagonist for you. Prestosuchus was a large Triassic rauisuchian predator. That means it was giant crocodile looking thing that ran with its legs directly below it, like a mammal or dinosaur, instead of sprawled out like a lizard. Basically a giant croco-tiger. They dominated the large predator niches during the Triassic. At this time, dinosaurs were just small things if a predator, or medium sized if a herbivore. It wasn’t until the great extinction at the end of the Triassic when Prestosuchus and its cousins died out that dinosaurs could truly begin to rule the world.  If you need a model for a more animal-like dragon relative, Prestosuchus fits the bill. They look like some of the art for the 3e and 4e D&D drakes. They’d make good mounts for lizardmen or other reptilian humanoids. In any case, #rollforinitiative  . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestosuchus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rauisuchia

You would come up to Quetzalcoatalus's armpit, at most.

Image
You would come up to Quetzalcoatalus's armpit, at most. 36 ft. wingspan. Fossil tracks show this is how they walked. They could probably fly 80 mph at 15,000 ft.  #rollforinitiative
