If you read one book on Cryptozoology, read this one
Cryptozoologicon, a brilliant, funny book that conjures up the magic of your favorite cryptids, from chupacabra to the yeti, while also subjecting them to scientific scrutiny. This is perhaps the greatest, and most beautifully illustrated, work of speculative evolutionary biology you'll ever read.
The book starts with an overview of Cryptozoology, it's history, what is aspires to be and what it is. This is quite short (it's the introduction after all) but sets the stage quite effectively.
The meat of the book are themonsters cryptids of course, and they are each given a chapter starting with a beautiful piece of art depicting the alleged creature (my favorite is the Zuiyo Maro creature).
The individual chapters are quite short, but dense with information. Kicking off with what the cryptozoological literature says about the critter, then comparing this with the available evidence (which often isn't much or contradictory) and giving an identification of the actual animal where possible.
The last part of the chapter is the 'fun part', where the authors go to town adding their own speculations and speculative evolutionary history,.
