From Voyageurs National Park on FB: Called “Catamaran” by locals, Bert Upton is among the strangest of historical characters on area waters. He lived in a hut built over a dug-out at Squirrel Narrows. Found frozen to death in the 1930s by Kettle Falls pioneer Oliver Knox; Upton was perched lifeless in the snow just a half-mile from his home. Shunning civilization, Upton defined the word hermit. First spotted rowing his crude log raft on Namakan, no one knows how he got there. Upton’s accent implied an English heritage but any personal inquiries brought a stony silence. Some suspected him a man fleeing the law; others saw a bizarre outcast; everyone knew he was peculiar. Just five feet tall and wildly unkempt, Catamaran wore hacked-off pants and walked barefoot with a stick. Winter demanded shoes but no socks, a cast-off Mackinaw, and a trailing cap made from the leg of old underwear. He was oddly religious, and suspicious of being poisoned. Maron's whole schtick has always pretty much been Maron giving himself therapy, hasn't it?
ReplyDeleteYes, but this episode especially so, since it's him interviewing people about himself. He also plays clips where his guests have given him some revelation into himself.
ReplyDeleteSo, sort of like "Let's check in with everyone in Marc's life and see how this whole '30 years of stand-up self therapy' thing has worked out!" ?
ReplyDeleteThat's actually kinda interesting. I fell way behind on WTF and stopped listening regularly a while ago. Will have to go and check it out!
That and, "Marc burned a bunch of people on his TV show and now he wants to apologize."
ReplyDeleteI have a weird relationship with this show. I started listening maybe 2 and a half years ago, when it was pretty well established already. I never listened to Air America, and I still haven't ever listened to his stand up. Although his latest show is in my Netflix queue. I have watched I think 3 episodes of the TV show.
So everything I know about Maron comes from the podcast.
Did you ever hear the WTF episode when Gallagher walked out on the interview?

His show on Air America (Morning Sedition) was brilliant, btw - even if you don't like the lefty politics (I do), they did some amazingly funny bits.
I heard of the gallagher episode, but never listened. I always mean to go back and listen to the famous episodes but haven't yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I would have loved Air America, I just never got the chance to listen.
