The Astounding Antagonists

The Astounding Antagonists
Rafael Chandler wanted me to review his book even though I'm just some nerd he knows on the tubes. So here it is.

Superheroes have always been about wish fulfillment. Power fantasies. I wish I could fly. I wish I was invisible. I wish I could lift a mountain. These days my wishes are different. I wish cops didn’t shoot unarmed kids. I wish the Koch brothers went broke. I wish lobbyists were outlawed. Rafael Chandler has brought my nerdy and political wishes together with the Astounding Antagonists.

Here the heroes are the establishment, protecting their interests above all others. What does that make anyone fighting the Man? A super villain of course. This isn’t new territory if you’ve read Watchmen or even Kick Ass, but it’s fresh, taking its cues equally from the latest eye-candy superhero movies and the current headlines.

Rafael’s writing is funny, sad, and pointed. He doesn’t pull punches with the action or your emotions. I’ve had a hard time sitting down and reading the past few months, but this kept me up when I should have been sleeping, something no book has done for me in a long time.
