I received this email from the school district today. It's glorious. Names changed to protect the clueless.

Dear Students, Parents and Community Members:
This weekend, it came to my attention an offensive video disparaging the Home High School football team was posted on Rival High School Football Coach Oldguy's Facebook page. In social media, anyone can "tag," or include the name of another social media user, in a social media post without the consent of the person they name. Coach Oldguy was "tagged" by another social media user in a posting featuring this video.
Coach Oldguy, intending to share the post in the form of a private message to Rival school administrators to make them aware of the video, inadvertently shared this post with the followers on his page. Oldguy deleted the post from his page after this, and followed up with the video’s creator to have the video removed from YouTube as well. This video was not created by a student or staff member of Redacted Area Schools.
The video was a scene from the 2004 movie "Downfall," which includes Nazi leader Adolf Hitler directing an outburst at his generals. This particular scene has been used in more than 185,000 YouTube parody videos. The film, which is in German, includes English subtitles. Websites on the Internet allow users to create their own subtitles, and the first of these parodies was created in 2005. A Google search for the phrase "Downfall parody" turns up more than 434,000 results.
After becoming aware of the situation, I immediately requested an investigation to identify the author of the video and review the actions of our staff. During our investigation, I spoke with Coach Oldguy about the situation, and he had already reached out to the producer of the video to have it removed. Coach Oldguy has expressed remorse for the situation and posted an apology on his Facebook page. Coach Oldguy said the contents of the video do not represent his vision about Rival High School football, the Home High School football program, or the mission and vision of Redacted Area Schools.
As we look to become one district with one vision, it is my hope we would not support any offensive actions, intended or unintended. We lead by creating an environment which supports the human decency of all.

Ooooops.
ReplyDeleteStephen Holowczyk a cogent description of Downfall videos.
ReplyDelete"As we look to become one district with one vision." I am so sorry. Your kids will get through it but I worry about the other ones.
ReplyDeleteShould have ended with Coach Oldguy becoming the new superintendent.
ReplyDeleteSo, another normal day at work in the education sector?
ReplyDeleteWe've got a Facebook page where the students post memes about our university. Staff, while officially not being aware of it, have shared the links with each other. Or, at least, with the staff that understand the memes being shared.
(I've never seen a student-created meme complaint about my system. Does that mean I win? Unfortunately, my boss wouldn't be able to understand that's a metric of success.)
One district, one vision...one folk?
ReplyDeleteone folk, one team, one classroom, one teacher...
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great cost-saving measure!
Wait until they see the 2 Coaches 1 Cup video...
ReplyDeleteNoooooo...
