The Confederate icon — a scarred Virginia battle flag — was captured by the First Minnesota Pvt. Marshall Sherman at the bloody and brutal Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Many of the First Minnesota Regiment, a volunteer force, died in the Union battle against the South, and Sherman was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role.

Virginia has asked for return of the flag for more than 100 years — and each time Minnesota has refused to return the hard-won symbol of victory.

In 2000, when Virginia legislators requested the Southern Cross flag once again, Gov. Jesse Ventura said: “Why? We won. … We took it. That makes it our heritage.”

  1. Gov. Jesse Ventura said: “Why? We won. … We took it. That makes it our heritage.” and that is the way it supposed to be.

  2. I'm surprised Pawlenty didn't send it back when he was running for President.
It's the kind of move that would have scored points with GOP primary voters.
Of course, he didn't win when he ran, did he.

  3. Until VA can defeat MN in a TX steel cage match for the flag...they don't get to have it back. That seems proper.

  6. Season / home field advantage would play a huge role.

Minnesota in the winter or Virginia in the summer definitely favors the home team.
