Got the D&D Next download finally.
Got the D&D Next download finally. Just skimmed, but we're back to having to have the rulebook open constantly to look up spells instead of having what you need in front of you in a stat block. This is utter bullshit.
So glad I'm in the 13th Age playtest.
So glad I'm in the 13th Age playtest.
It does seem somewhat regressive.
ReplyDeleteActually, Heroes Against Darkness has some of the same ideas 13th Age does, namely taking a power at a higher level and weapon damage increasing as level increases for fighter-types. So your rules are looking pretty fucking good right now in comparison.
ReplyDeleteCasey Garske Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI continue to be intrigued by what they're trying to do with zeroing out the progression curve, and it certainly looks like the've really dropped the HP increase each level for this playtest (Fighters gain 6 HP, Clerics gain 4 HP, Wizards gain 4 HP).
But, I can't abide some of this stuff:
1. We're back to spell level != character level.
2. We're back to specific idiosyncratic weapons and armor proficiencies for specific classes.
3. They've gutted the action economy so now we have lots of things you can choose to do (attack, cast spell, etc) and some separate unaccounted movement.
The action economy is one of the best things about 4e. Simply lowering the number of powers available, letting powers increase in power along with level, and a little more specialization in classes to make them play differently would have been enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI understand going after 3e players, but this is more like going after 2e players.
D&D Next is like 3rd edition from an alternate dimension.
I'm not sure where this is heading yet...
ReplyDeleteRemoving the action economy is leading to weirdness (already): why on earth is the Healing Word spell not a Move Action? You can cast this spell and make an attack (or cast another minor spell).
I will say "advantage/disadvantage" is an interesting mechanic.
ReplyDeleteYeah, definitely interesting. I wonder if this is going to extend into spells that give you advantage or disadvantage over extended durations?
ReplyDeleteI think what we are ssing now is the D&D Next "Base Game". If you want tactical combat, you add the tactial rules in this book. If you wnat story driven rules, use this optional book etc. To make everyone happy I thnk they are going to have a base system with a bunc of "optional" rulesets that you can pcik and choose from.
