Picked up XCOM today.
Picked up XCOM today. When I played the original it was so hard, it prompted me to learn how to use a hexidecimal editor so I could change my soldiers stats and give myself billions of dollars. I don't think I can do that on my PS3, but I still had to accept the "Classic" difficulty. "Only for experienced XCOM players." Fuck yeah, that's me.
And holy shit, I haven't felt my heart pound while playing a video game in forever. Skyrim is pretty, but this game is all about tension.
I gasped when my sniper was wounded. Now she's out of action for 9 days. FUCK!
I'm thinking about getting it on Steam.
ReplyDeleteIsaac Sher has been playing this so much that I think he's starting to make tactical advances between the living room and kitchen, taking advantage of cover.
ReplyDeleteWell, you never know when a Chrysallid is hiding behind your fridge.
ReplyDeleteI had an assault in my starting squad who made it all the way to Colonel and became my first psychic soldier.
ReplyDeleteShe was the lone survivor of two missions, including a base raid where she single handedly fought off the zombafied remains of her squad-mates after a Chrystalid ambush.
I gave her an alloy cannon (Super shotgun) and a skill that let her get a free reaction shot when any enemy moved within 4 squares of her. This ability saved her from the Chrystalids and the rest of her squad from Mutons on several occasions. At her peak she managed to kill two Mutons in one turn just by opening a door, killing the first as it moved in front of her during it's interrupt move, and the second with her normal action. After that mission she became my first soldier to reach colonel, getting a skill that made her immune to critical hits, making her pretty much unkillable under normal circumstances. And my first Psychic soldier, mind crushing helpless Floaters.
This story has an ending though, and it's not happy. As the squad was pinned down between Elite Mutons on one side, and a Sectopod that seemingly came out of nowhere on the other (I have no idea how it got behind us), she missed the reaction shot that would have killed it, and it took out half the squad, and critically wounded her in one shot.
The next turn, the lone survivor, a heavy weapons specialist, Finished off the Sectopod, but lacking a med-kit, was unable to save the colonel, and was killed by the Mutons two turns later.
Stories like that make me want to buy it right now, lol. Stuck at work for eight more hours though.
ReplyDeleteI'm still playing the original, and loving every moment of it.
