The internet is funny. I was looking for some pulpy art for a project I'm working on and found this cover. I thought it was totally badass. Black Amazon of Mars. Awesome. Then I saw the author's name: Leigh Brackett. That sounded familiar.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leigh_Brackett Holy shit, she was one of the screenwriters for Empire Strikes Back (or not really, if Wikipedia is correct) and The Big Sleep (with William Faulkner!). Anyway, I was in the mood for some planetary romance anyway, so I went to BN.com and picked up an ebook of some of her sci-fi stuff and just a few pages in we've got a human mercenary who was raised by natives of Mercury who is anti-colonial because miners killed his tribe, wanted by Earth for sabotaging corporate interests on Venus and running guns to the natives, and is now undercover on Mars trying to prevent genocide. Holy shit, this is awesome. Anyway, now you know about Leigh Brackett too.

Carcassonne and Pirates Cove game night.

It was a merry ACKS-Mas tonight in the Caves of Krampus. The party fought snow golems, gremlins, animated tannenbaums, and Krampus of course. The snow golems were pushovers. The tannenbaums beat down the greedy wizard who tried to steal the material components from Krampus's summoning circle. Krampus himself was defeated by blinding him with a light spell, grabbing the children he'd kidnapped, and running like hell. Turns out the kids were doppelgangers and Krampus was totally legit in stealing them. Then Santa came and handed out presents to the party. This is as festive as I've ever been in my life.

Starship combat: Think I figured out one way to get players on board with thinking about the ship. Make the ship's stats dependent on the skills of the crew. Physical Defense is dependent on the pilot's skill. Electronic Defense is dependent on the highest computer or related tech skill in the party. Hit Points are dependent on the highest engineering/repair skill in the party.

Changing the subject...It's 70 million years ago and you are an intelligent mutant dinosaur. Your mutant dinosaur civilization is at it's height. Carnivores and herbivores live together in peace because the carnivores only eat regular stupid herbivores. Suddenly, extradimensional space squid invade earth. You need to further mutate yourself to combat the squid menace. You will eventually look like an amalgamation of many different dinosaurs. I need a list of 15 mutant carnivore powers and 15 mutant herbivore powers. Starship combat: Fun for PC pilot, boring for everyone else. What can everyone else be doing? More than one pilot? What does a co-pilot do? Gunner if you have combat skills? Repairs if you're an engineer? What else can get the other players rolling the dice so everyone has something fun to do? I'm thinking of Millennium Falcon / Serenity type ships.

This is what I'm afraid of. It sounds like the ultra fast frame rate gives the same effect as watching an older movie on blu-ray. When I watched The Princess Bride in HD on blu-ray I was struck by how (much more) fake everything looked. Same with The Sound of Music. Sets that once looked real now looked like...sets. And they look like they were shot on videotape instead of film. Also, it sounds like Pete still hasn't found an editor to put him in his place. Just under 3 hours? And two movies to go? Still reading the Iron Kingdoms RPG and now I'm thinking minis. But not Privateer minis. Need a bit more variety for the rpg. Here's a few that I found that I thought would work. Mostly Reaper and Malifaux.

I see the ultimate min-maxing for gear in the Iron Kingdoms RPG is to select the Arcane Mechanik and Warcaster careers. Then you can get both a mekanical weapon and Warcaster armor.  This is cool, because my role model for the Iron Kingdoms is mercenary bad-ass Magnus the Traitor, who is a Mechanik-Warcaster.
