Strap on your harness, unsheathe your sword, and light a torch. Originally shared by Jim Carver Journey to the center of the Earth: a massive sinkhole 66 feet (20 m) across and 100 ft (30 m) deep opened up on May 29, 2010 in Guatemala City after heavy rains from Tropical Storm Agatha. The sinkhole collapsed suddenly, taking a three-story house that was used as factory, claiming fifteen lives. The sinkhole formed because Guatemala City is built upon volcanic pumice deposits, which are unconsolidated and of low density, allowing easy erosion. According to Sam Bonis, a geologist at Dartmouth College, because of lax city zoning regulations and building codes, leaking pipes went unfixed long enough to create the conditions necessary for this hole to form (it technically wasn't a sinkhole, since sinkholes form in limestone rock.) How do you patch something like this?

So my wife finished the last Sookie Stackhouse novel last night. She's been telling me how crazy the fans have been. I'm trying to think of a beloved fantasy/sci-fi series that ended without legions of irrational, pissed-off fans. I can think of several that petered out before getting to the cray-cray stage, or going so long that no one cared anymore. I'm going with TV here because I tend to avoid mega-long book series.  X-Files: too long. No one cared anymore. Battlestar Galactica: pissed off fans. Buffy: pissed off fans. Lost: pissed off fans. Firefly: Never got far enough to piss anyone off, instead created posthumous crazy fans. Star Trek TNG & DS9: maybe the only show/series I can think of without pissed off fans at the end? I also made my wife tell me which hunk of man-candy Sookie picked.

Dear neighbors down the road from my parent's house: The reason I called the cops on your party was because I could hear your music coming in the window from three blocks away. But it could just as easily have been because of your terrible taste in music. Bryan Adams, Journey, whoever sang "Cotton Eyed Joe," and now Neil Diamond.

Target has Halo "Micro Ops" toys on clearance. I got the VTOL, two drop pod sets (two pods each + ODST), and a Ghost set for $2.38 each. I need to check other Targets to see if they've got more. I would buy as many VTOLs and Warthogs I could find. The drop pods are pretty neat too. Good for terrain or reinforcements.  Scale is probably 18mm. Vehicles are fine for 15mm, but the Spartans and ODST are tall and thin for 15mm. Not a huge deal, but maybe for scale nazis it might be. But I got enough minis here for a game for under $10.

Speaking live to a survivor of the deadly tornado in Moore, Okla.

Speaking live to a survivor of the deadly tornado in Moore, Okla., Blitzer declared the woman “blessed,” her husband “blessed,” and her son “blessed.” He then asked, “You’ve gotta thank the Lord, right? Do you thank the Lord for that split-second decision?” But as she held her 18-month-old son, Rebecca Vitsmun politely replied, “I’m actually an atheist.” A flummoxed Blitzer quickly lobbed back, “You are. All right. But you made the right call,” and Vitsmun graciously offered him a lifeline. “We are here,” she said, “and I don’t blame anyone for thanking the Lord.” Nicely done, Rebecca Vitsmun. Slam dunk! Rebecca Vitsmun, I wish you and everyone else in Oklahoma a speedy recovery. But Wolf Blitzer, you are a fucking douche. http://www.salon.com/2013/05/22/tornado_survivor_to_wolf_blitzer_sorry_im_an_atheist_i_dont_have_to_thank_the_lord/

This is where I'll be tonight. You may be jealous, nerds. Minnesota Public Radio, the Science Museum of Minnesota, and the Public Insight Network present SCIENCE NIGHT MINNESOTA - MISSION TO MARS at The Fitzgerald Theater on Tuesday, May 21st, at 7:00 p.m. Space geeks of Minnesota unite! John Grotzinger, the head of NASA’s Mars Curiosity mission, is coming to Saint Paul to share the latest research and a behind the scenes look at the red planet’s robot rover. The Daily Circuit’s Tom Weber will ask Grotzinger about new discoveries, the potential for the building blocks of life on Mars, and how it felt when Curiosity touched down after the so-called seven minutes of terror. They’ll be joined by Boing Boing science editor Maggie Koerth-Baker, who’ll help explore the world of space and scientific discovery. http://fitzgeraldtheater.publicradio.org/events/

Excellent adventure hooks even in an article about water. Let's set the existence-of-god issue aside for a later volume, and just stipulate that in some way, self-replicating organisms came into existence on this planet and immediately began trying to get rid of each other, either by spamming their environments with rough copies of themselves, or by more direct means which hardly need to be belabored. Most of them failed, and their genetic legacy was erased from the universe forever, but a few found some way to survive and to propagate. After about three billion years of this sometimes zany, frequently tedious fugue of carnality and carnage, Godfrey Waterhouse IV was born, in Murdo, South Dakota, to Blanche, the wife of a Congregational preacher named Bunyan Waterhouse. Like every other creature on the face of the earth, Godfrey was, by birthright, a stupendous badass, albeit in the somewhat narrow technical sense that he could trace his ancestry back up a long line of slightly less highly evolved stupendous badasses to that first self-re

This is for Senator Dan Hall (@SenatorDanHall) who said, "legalizing same-sex marriage would divide the state like nothing since the Civil War..." History lesson time! A ridiculous percentage of Minnesotans volunteered to serve the Union during the Civil War. The 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry was one of the longest serving units of the war and fought in almost every major battle. Including both battles of Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Not to mention its defence of Cemetery Ridge during Gettysburg ensured the Union victory. They fought for the rights of people that lived over a thousand miles away and you won't even fight for the rights of your neighbors. You spit on their sacrifice. You said, "People ask me, 'Senator Hall, don't you want to be on the right side of history?' The truth is, I'm more concerned about being on the right side of eternity." Well, dude, history is eternity.  But I'll also praise Sen. Branden Petersen, t

More rodents!

Image
More rodents! You may remember my posts about having a mouse mole shrew in my walls and trapping the little sucker. Now I went to have my oil changed yesterday and a very amused technician showed me this in my air filter. Some varmint has been squirreling away dog food (which we keep in the garage) inside the nice, warm air filter. He didn't have a vacuum, so I cleaned it out today. Under the dog food was corn from someone's birdfeeder.  So now the dog food is in a 5-gallon bucket and I'll have to check my air filter occasionally to see if it's been back. Cripes!
