This is for Senator Dan Hall (@SenatorDanHall) who said, "legalizing same-sex marriage would divide the state like nothing since the Civil War..."
History lesson time! A ridiculous percentage of Minnesotans volunteered to serve the Union during the Civil War. The 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry was one of the longest serving units of the war and fought in almost every major battle. Including both battles of Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Not to mention its defence of Cemetery Ridge during Gettysburg ensured the Union victory.
They fought for the rights of people that lived over a thousand miles away and you won't even fight for the rights of your neighbors. You spit on their sacrifice.
You said, "People ask me, 'Senator Hall, don't you want to be on the right side of history?' The truth is, I'm more concerned about being on the right side of eternity." Well, dude, history is eternity.
But I'll also praise Sen. Branden Petersen, the only republican to vote for equality. He probably just voted himself out of a job. Thanks for sticking to your guns. You do the 1st Minnesota proud.

By "divide the State like nothing since the Civil War," what he means is that he's a pro-slavery racist in addition to a bigot.
ReplyDeleteBrian Takle if you look at his stance on integration of schools, that's exactly right.
ReplyDeleteHis full speech is here:

"This document will split our schools, our churches, our towns, our counties, our state. It will hurt businesses and confuse children. More than any single issue has ever done since the civil war."
I still think the confused children part is hilarious. How the hell is that a justification for anything? You know what else confuses children? Calculus. Let's ban it!
ReplyDeleteThe "confusion" thing actually means, "I feel weird about explaining gay people to my kids."
ReplyDeleteI've seen this in my own family.
