After last week's GI Joe comic panel posting marathon, I decided to buy the first trade of Special Missions. Why Special Missions? It was bi-monthly and I only bought a few issues that I can remember. They're also stand alone stories that make it easy to review since story continuity doesn't matter.

Issue 0 was the back half of the double-sized Issue 50 of Real American Hero.

Trotskyist terrorists from San Francisco hijack a Russian airliner in order to crash it into Soviet chemical weapons factory. The resulting gas cloud will kill millions. Stalker and Hawk storm their offices while Beach Head, Flint, and Lady Jaye secretly board the plane while it refuels.

In this story we see Larry Hama's love of weird political organizations, long revolutionary insults, and gadgets.

Bad Guys: Leon Trotsky Brigade of the Fourth International.
Running Dog insult: Yes.
Cool toy(s): Taser, dead-man switch.
Bad-Ass Civilian: US chess champ on his way to Moscow for tournament who stands up to the terrorists.
Weird stuff: Herb Trimpe couldn't resist a rather tame panty shot as Lady Jaye changes into her flight attendant disguise.

Rating: 5 Yo Joes

  1. Dammit, now I seriously want to run a GI Joe game.

...probably using AMMO or 3:16 ...

  2. 3:16 seems a bit bleak for a Joe game. (Unless you're going for super bleak Joes setting, in which case never mind :) )

  3. Depends on the mood. 3:16 for the bloodier, I-Want-To-Use-Movie-Joes-So-They-Can-Die game, or AMMO for classic cartoony Joes.

  4. Yep. Easy to take a screenshot of a panel.
