Special Missions 13
No lighthearted, toy-selling romp this issue. Outback, Dusty, Mangler, and Lightfoot are on a mission to destroy an old depot of supplies that they don't want to fall into the hands of the new communist government of Trucial Abysia. The Joes are captured and despite the objections of a rather compassionate captain Yusif, the political officer tortures Lightfoot with a car battery for info on the Joe's mission. Lightfoot spills everything. Mangler calls him a traitor and worse.
Captain Yusif is ordered to kill the Joes, but he can't do it. He gives them one canteen of water and tells them to head for the coast and drives away. In a poignant and touching scene, Lightfoot insists on finishing his mission although he can barely walk because of the torture. The Joes decide to follow through and Dusty and Outback show off their survival skills in the desert.
Once at the bunker the Joes break in and Lightfoot improvises an explosive in true Larry Hama style. While escaping, Mangler apologizes to Lightfoot for what he said, realizing he had no right to criticise his comrade in arms. When they're about to be captured again, Mangler leaps from their stolen truck and singlehandedly holds the pursuers off. He is killed when an APC crashes into him. Captain Yusif has some choice words for the political officer, and Outback tells Dusty he was going to wash Mangler out of the Joes for not being a team player, but there's no reason not to put him in for a posthumous medal now.
Bad Guys: Trucial Abyssian troops
Running Dog insult: No, but Capitalist Adventurers.
Cool toy(s): Improvised explosives with flour and cocoa.
Bad-Ass Non-Joe: Captain Yusif
Rating: 5 Yo Joes.
