Special Missions 12
Special Missions 12 is a funny issue. It introduces a new piece of Joe hardware and its pilot, Maverick (really, Larry?). But it’s also an issue that highlights Hama’s nostalgia for old aircraft and his love for New York state.
We start with a small-town airshow where Bert the pilot flies his classic Stearman. The highlight of the show is that the Joes are the special guests and Ace, Slipstream, and Maverick put on quite a show. After the show, Maverick gets Bert to take him for a ride since he rode in a Stearman as a kid. While they are in the air, Firefly and a couple Cobra goons disable the Skystriker and Conquest and steal the Vector. In a somewhat improbable development, Bert and Maverick are able to keep up with a supersonic jet because Firefly is keeping the Vector close to the ground to avoid radar and if he flies faster, he’ll slam into the ground or a hill.
After a tour of New York state including some local geographic features and a raceway, Bert and Mav track the vector to a garbage barge in New York Harbor. They land the Stearman on the Intrepid aircraft carrier, which is super cool. They storm the barge and call in the cavalry. It’s kind of an innocent story, as far as GI Joe goes.
Bad Guys: Cobra
Running Dog insult: Nope.
Cool toy(s): The Stearman and the Vector
Bad-Ass Non-Joe: Bert the Stearman pilot.
Rating: 4 Yo Joes.
