Special Missions 16
This issue is a rare crossover issue with the regular series. It is also strange in that Cobra Commander actually makes an appearance.
This isn’t my favorite issue by far, but it has some stuff going for it. We start with the Joes spying on Cobra Island with their satellite in the aftermath of the Cobra civil war. Check out the “Magnify and Enhance” buttons Mainframe uses. Love it. Cobra is moving a bunch of suspicious material around on their airstrip and the Joes want to know what’s up. So all the Joe jets, joined for the first time by their stealth pilot (what’s his name again? no one knows) head out to take some “funny pictures.” Wild Bill, Mainframe, and Lady Jaye follow in a C-130 decked out with electronic warfare equipment.
Reaching Cobra Island, there is the predictable dogfight, and we learn again that the secret of the Joes is that they are a team, while Cobra is a conglomeration of individually motivated mercenaries who can’t work together. Again and again, the Joes come to each other’s aid, and the Cobras bicker and fight. For me the high point of this issue is Lady Jaye busting out a window on the C-130 and spraying her M-16 at the cocky Stratoviper. So totally badass.
The Joes get their pictures and head back. But, of course, it was part of Cobra Commander’s plan to draw attention away from the docks on the other side of the island. This plot point goes nowhere in Special Missions, referring back to the plot in the main book.
Bad Guys: Cobra, specifically, Cobra pilots.
Running Dog Insult: Nope
Cool Toy(s): "Magnify" and "Enhance" buttons. The Joe stealth fighter, a dead ringer for the fictional F-19 everyone thought existed in the late 80's.
Bad-Ass Non-Joe: None! Only Joes and Cobras are featured.
Rating: 3 Yo Joes.

If I remember correctly, Special Missions sales had been lagging so this was one of those attempts to get cross over audience.
ReplyDeleteI believe it. This is a pretty toy-centric issue too. There's a couple more like this later.
ReplyDeleteDoes it include Battleforce 2000 or the weird prop plane?
ReplyDeleteBattleforce 2000 at least. But that issue is pretty good because it's got a ton of politics stuff in it. You just have to get past the stupid tiger stripes on everything.
ReplyDeleteWhat is interesting is that Larry knocked off Battle Force 2000 (among many others) when he went on that Joe murdering spree in the 110's - 120's. Drove them into an oil refinery and blew it the fuck up.
ReplyDeleteSee, I still haven't read those. Still deciding if I want to do this for the regular series after I'm done with Special Missions.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a lot of issues... Maybe on a by arc basis?
ReplyDeleteArcs would be good. Cause yeah, that's a lot of issues.
ReplyDeleteOh shit. I just found these and ordered the first two volumes - http://www.amazon.com/G-I-Joe-Complete-Collection-Vol/dp/161377396X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_z
ReplyDeleteHoly shit.
ReplyDeleteI looked inside and saw the cover for that #1 giant issue I actually bought from the wire comic rack thing. My second comic ever, a mere 2 months after we arrived in the US.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, Casey Garske thank you for making me nostalgic.
