Hey, you should really click on the Google Doodle today. It’s Mary Anning’s birthday. Since the kids and I have been on such a dinosaur kick, we've been reading a lot of dino-related kids’ books. Any book that talks about Mesozoic sea reptiles will talk about Mary Anning. But mostly her childhood, not her adult life. Her Wikipedia page is pretty detailed. When she was a kid she started collecting fossils on the coast of England near her home. Her discoveries helped kickstart the science of paleontology. Predictably, because she was a woman AND not an Anglican she wasn't allowed to participate in the scientific community.

This painting was done based on her fossil finds. I love these old views of prehistoric animals. They belong in a monster manual.
