Edition wars come in many forms.
Edition wars come in many forms. The superior tag is actually Ditch 'Em, where the "it" person tries to stop the other players from touching "ghoul," a linguistically deviated form of "goal." Best played in the pitch-black woods of North Dakota

Our favorites were Don't Touch the Sand tag and Capture the Flag. If tag includes swimming then also Sharks & Minnows and the infamous Corner Game.
ReplyDeleteYou're going to have to explain what the Corner Game is and why it's infamous.
ReplyDeleteWe used to play Zap. You had a jail (a clearing in the woods) and a jailer who stood in the jail with the flash light. You could only go out as far as the beam could go and had to expose some part of you. They would search the woods calling zap when he noticed someone. They would then have to keep the beam on you as you walked in or you could run. The Jailer was the jailer until they caught everyone. However, if you could sneak into the jail without being seen and yell jailbreak, they had to turn off the light and let everyone run off and hide again for 30 seconds.
ReplyDeleteOK, so the Corner Game is something we picked up from the University of Tennessee swim team. It's the kind of game you can only play when you have a whole pool and no lifeguards to tell you 'no.' It's very physical.
ReplyDeleteSetup
Boys and girls are each split into two teams and positioned in the corners of the pool, boys across from boys, girls across from girls. Boys and girls would take turns but often boys and girls teams were linked (e.g. red vs blue) such that you had a brother/sister team to cheer for.
Play
On a turn, a whistle is blown and both teams must swim through each other with the goal of getting to the opposite corner first. Ganging up on individual swimmers and forcing them back to their corner-of-origin is a key tactic (to include full contact wrestling and holding people under until they tap out but not to include head butts/punches/kicks), as is swimming through the opposite gender's corner to avoid the fray.
Resolution
If no hostages are taken, a point is awarded to the team whose members all made it to the far corner the fastest.
Hostages
If hostages are taken, play pauses once everyone who has made it to the opposite corner has made it. The team with the most hostages is awarded a point.
Ties
If an equal number of hostages are take, a tie-breaker round is held in which only the hostages compete.
Switch
After one gender goes, the process is repeated by the other gender.
Yeah, I see why thats infamous.
ReplyDeleteZap sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteReasoning out why the "no tag backs" rule made tag better was my first introduction to game design.
