Complaining about a 14 year old system is kinda shitty, so I’ll do it privately. My buddy is starting to GM a  Weird Wars d20 campaign, and I need to resist the urge to suggest house rules. Not my game!

If there’s one thing that aggravates me about the d20 system is linking attack bonus with class level instead of character level. I just cannot even think of multiclassing if it means not increasing my attack bonus two levels in a row. Even with all the OSR experience I have now, if the system lets me plan ahead or optimize, I can’t help it. Stop me before I pick a prestige class four levels in advance!

  1. The optimization is not even solely a personal thing. If you have a character who functions like they are 5 levels lower because you made flavor choices, it drags the whole group down. Even the DM has to struggle not to be annoyed at a sub-optimal sad-sack character not pulling the weight.

    And, just because:

  2. there's been savage worlds books published for the setting since then. from rome to space marines. you could just drop hints that such a thing exists. there's even free conversion guides.

  3. Oh, I know. I'm really the only one with problems with the d20 system. No one except me would want any other system.

But it's just a tiny complaint. I'm psyched about the game and my buddy getting back into tabletop gaming after only playing Warcraft for a decade.

  4. What's wrong with suggesting house rules? Not all suggestions are surreptitious demands.

  5. I just don't want to be a Nosy Nellie when he's just coming back to gaming after a long time.

  7. i grok. i'll play just about anything. GM's fiat. but i'm much more willing to be a stickler for system and setting when i'm the GM.

but still, the dynamics of the group benefit from everyone involved having access to the sort of gaming experience they are looking for. i think you owe it to your GM (and the rest of the group) to at least mention your reservations about the system.

  8. When we're all dead because our ACs are only 13 at most I'll bring up my add 1/2 character level to AC house rule. :)

  9. Casey Garske In a war game, low AC and getting killed if in actual combat may not be a bug so much as a feature.

  10. Exactly. Grab cover. Don't be stupid. I'm going to play it OSR style. Run the fuck away if we have to.
