From Voyageurs National Park on FB: Called “Catamaran” by locals, Bert Upton is among the strangest of historical characters on area waters. He lived in a hut built over a dug-out at Squirrel Narrows. Found frozen to death in the 1930s by Kettle Falls pioneer Oliver Knox; Upton was perched lifeless in the snow just a half-mile from his home. Shunning civilization, Upton defined the word hermit. First spotted rowing his crude log raft on Namakan, no one knows how he got there. Upton’s accent implied an English heritage but any personal inquiries brought a stony silence. Some suspected him a man fleeing the law; others saw a bizarre outcast; everyone knew he was peculiar. Just five feet tall and wildly unkempt, Catamaran wore hacked-off pants and walked barefoot with a stick. Winter demanded shoes but no socks, a cast-off Mackinaw, and a trailing cap made from the leg of old underwear. He was oddly religious, and suspicious of being poisoned. Lemme take a peek...
ReplyDeleteHmm, okay. At first blush it seems pretty expensive... but you may get decent contacts and networking along the way.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't seem to say much about SDLC framework, or the people side of delivering software on team projects. That's where I could see students in this program suffering, because there's no guidance about it on their site, while being a vital part of software dev.
It looks like they have an apprenticeship program, and some small scholarship opportunities through partners like The Nerdery. It's not clear how many of their students are accepted to the apprenticeship or are hired after the program. That's the biggest worry I'd see with this.
So if I were considering this, that's the info I'd want to see: are their students getting accepted to the apprenticeship program (and how many of them are), or are they getting hired?
Thank you! It's pretty new too and there's not a lot of info beyond the press blurbs.
ReplyDeleteMy family member started today, so I'm at least happy it's not shady.
Thanks again.
I think if your relative goes in expecting this to be the beginning of the process of being a developer, then they probably won't be disappointed. But if they expect to have a job dropped in their lap straight away... they may be sad.
ReplyDeleteCool. Then I think it'll be fine.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like this crew has some state and local backers, too, which may help mitigate the newness of the org.
