From Voyageurs National Park on FB: Called “Catamaran” by locals, Bert Upton is among the strangest of historical characters on area waters. He lived in a hut built over a dug-out at Squirrel Narrows. Found frozen to death in the 1930s by Kettle Falls pioneer Oliver Knox; Upton was perched lifeless in the snow just a half-mile from his home. Shunning civilization, Upton defined the word hermit. First spotted rowing his crude log raft on Namakan, no one knows how he got there. Upton’s accent implied an English heritage but any personal inquiries brought a stony silence. Some suspected him a man fleeing the law; others saw a bizarre outcast; everyone knew he was peculiar. Just five feet tall and wildly unkempt, Catamaran wore hacked-off pants and walked barefoot with a stick. Winter demanded shoes but no socks, a cast-off Mackinaw, and a trailing cap made from the leg of old underwear. He was oddly religious, and suspicious of being poisoned. Surviving on snared rabbits and fish, he ofte...

Not too spoilery. Nothing in here that I hadn't already heard before VII came out. (Ford was initially announced as having signed on for all three films -- presumably there will be some flashbacks featuring Han?)
I like Gugu Mbatha-Raw and am interested to see what kind of character she'll end up playing.
Holy shit the villain choice.

Maybe they'll focus on Benicio's character instead of Snoke.
(Snoke kinda fuckin' sucks.)

I see no Kylo Ren. I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I liked the character but Adam Driver seemed a little too lanky hipster for my liking in a dark side villain.

You're right, I don't see him in the "returning section."

I sincerely hope Adam Driver comes back, even if it's not in this episode. I thought he gave one of the best performances of The Force Awakens, if not the best... and there's got to be some kind of resolution to his arc.
I'm thinking his exclusion from the list might be an oversight, misdirection, or something. At least, I really hope so. The amount of work they put into the character suggests to me that they can't really just drop him. Maybe he takes a movie off while Kylo trains up with Snoke (ugh) or something?

I liked Darth Woobie too. That part could have been ridiculous but he pulled it off.

Casey G. Driver had the advantage of having viewed a great example of how badly the idea of an insecure, emo "Darth Woobie" can go -- Hayden Christensen showed exactly how not to do it. "See this guy? Don't be this guy."

I really liked Ren and I have a feeling he'll be back in 9.
From Wikipedia (emphasis mine):
ReplyDelete"Kennedy announced on December 17, 2015 at the London premiere for The Force Awakens that the entire cast would return for Episode VIII: "There will be a handful of new cast members in Episode VIII but also all the cast members you see here tonight will be in it as well", therefore also confirming Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Carrie Fisher, and Daisy Ridley reprising as well."
