D&D will always be my #1 game, but the exploding damage dice in Savage Worlds can be so satisfying.
You should watch this awesome Sesame Street/Beastie Boys mash-up right now.

You could do something similar for D&D.
ReplyDeleteLike, on crits all dice explode. That'd make crits really nasty.
Or Superority and Inspiration dice explode.
something like that.
Making an Executioner's Axe in 4E Vicious so it could get more dierolls for every 12 you got had sick dicefeel.
ReplyDeleteI like what Silent Legion does. There's a "slaughter die" which starts as d6 and goes up for various reasons. You roll it when you roll damage, and if it comes up 6+ then you triple the damage. So when your slaughter die goes up to d8, then d10, that's entertaining.
ReplyDeleteTypically crit fail / crit success dice mechanics are symetrical (e.g. 1 or 20). I like how they're asymmetrical in Savage Worlds. If you roll snake eyes on your trait die / wild die, that's a crit fail, but there's no ceiling to the crit successes; you can just keep getting raises all day. It's definitely exciting. :-)
ReplyDeleteLast night my d6 strength and a d4 weapon did 27 points of damage.
ReplyDeleteHighest single-die explosion roll we've seen in years of Savage Worlds was 71 on a single damage die.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of things in Savage Worlds that seem to get folks leaning in to the table...even when it's not their turn...just to see what happens. I really appreciate that about the game.
ReplyDeleteMy son one shot a dragon once. The final total was somewhere in the high 50s. Made for a short but memorable session.
ReplyDeleteProves that Savage Worlds is the correct ruleset for Middle Earth. Bard's damage dice blew up big time.
