Ok, so it's completely obvious where this story is going to go and how it will end, but it's still some Unholy Land level shit. It would be cool if demons poured out of the open tomb and fought the legion though.

Apparently this is actually good! I was just as surprised as anyone to hear that. I'm always down for Sword-And-Sandal stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching it, and not ironically.
ReplyDeleteHuh. Reviews seem more positive than I expected.
ReplyDeleteI expect very little from the cinema of my coreligionists :|
Hmmm. I wonder if the (inevitable) historical inaccuracies will beat my enjoyment of a biblical noir procedural.
ReplyDeleteIs this one of those church-funded religious movies, or a conventional studio film?
I'd be very impressed if the question of the resurrection is left ambiguous - we see no miracles, but we hear people speak of them. That would make for some great character tension in our roman legion cop, as his own beliefs are challenged, his cynicism tested. The real power her isn't miracles and resurrections, but what people believe.
Also, curious which of the early Church's interpretations of the resurrection they go with. The resurrection of the body entire. The resurrection of spirit, seen only by the true believers. The raised spirt made flesh, perfected. The resurrection into a supernal realm, of which the believer is granted brief views. There were a lot of different takes on this one, our modern "risen in body" thing was only one of many.
I don't think it's a major studio. The review I read said the second half is on the nose. You get a rezzed Jesus walking around giving hugs. They do an orthodox rez.
ReplyDeleteReleased by Sony though. I think a lot of studios have boutique imprints for Christian films.
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, this is great inspiration for my maybe-in-a-year-or-so Easter themed sequel to Unholy Land. That will feature physical resurrection of the body and literal descent into hell.
ReplyDeleteHell ain't gonna harrow itself
ReplyDeleteHoly crap, the director is an actual big-time director. I didn't recognize his name.

Daniel Davis nope. It takes a 20th level cleric.
ReplyDeleteWait. Isn't it more of a "metaphorical" rising than a literal one? Of course there is a "Sunday school" version of the story but I thought thinkers gave up on that interpretation years ago.
ReplyDeleteAnyway.. Demons? Yep, that would be the way to go n this one.
Yeah, Casey G. I think I'd be more excited about your version

ReplyDeleteah well, that's a disappointment. I'd have done ambiguous all the way, including some people swearing resurrected Jesus was totally the real guy, and others saying no way, it wasn't him. The Roman can't get his mother to confirm anything, but in a moment of conscience holds back from leaning on her the way the Romans might otherwise have done.
You end it with the Roman going armed to this maybe-jesus, to confront him... or maybe join him. He opens the door, walks in, Jesus remains out of focus, you can't make him out. The door closes, black, credits.
Then suddenly flash to demons for a split second. #jumpscare
