Facebook should have a feature where you have an alternate “serious profile picture” that you can use for messages so when you send someone a message saying you’re sorry their dad died it’s not next to the picture of a ridiculous lizard person.

    If they have all of those optional reactions, you should be able to tie a different profile pic to each one.

    I think it actually has to do with the avatar you used when you signed into Messenger. I have seen very different avatars in Messenger than on FB.

    I don't use Messenger. I found a workaround so I could continue my habit of using FB's mobile website instead of their apps.

    This is why I have two Facebook accounts. One is my professional one, the other is my geeky video games, rpg games, probably closer to my real personality but has a fake name one
