OSR to 5e
OSR to 5e
Wrote up the NPCs for A Thousand Dead Babies for 5e last night. I don’t think the challenge changes much. In fact, it might be deadlier. 5e is more forgiving with healing between encounters, but at 1st level, that still isn’t much.
Matthew Nelson has been running us through some converted TSR adventures in his 5e campaign and those have consistently been when we get our asses kicked. Mostly because we keep taking bait we shouldn’t.
Yeah, I feel like in 5e if you can get out of the fight you're good, but getting out of the fight is harder than it was in 3.x or 4th.
ReplyDelete4e is the only edition where one good damage roll can't take out a 1st level character in one hit. Otherwise, all editions are pretty equal at 1st level.
ReplyDeleteIt is absolutely more deadly if you give creatures an ability to gain combat advantage. Increasing the chance of a critical hit on a first level character radically changes the first level game. When I run 5e, no one starts at level 1 on purpose due to goblins and the like getting it so easy.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't use flanking in 5e.
ReplyDeleteCasey G. Well, there isn't flanking in 5E anyway, at least not by 4E standards. It's just that a lot of the pack creatures have that thing where they get Advantage if they have a buddy next to the target.
ReplyDeleteOh, you mean the creatures that usually come in hordes get Advantage as long as they have one buddy next to them? Surely a very hard thing for them to do and an easy thing for the players to prevent!
No, I was forgetting about the goblin features. Flanking is in the DMG as an optional rule.
ReplyDeleteI made the mistake of letting the optional flanking rule in from the start. Now the only fights that challenge the party appropriately are those where I can surround them. That mostly happens when they take the bait in those old TSR adventures.
ReplyDeleteIf Tetza is in a position to flank or be flanked something has gone horribly wrong.
