Most of my early sessions of "D&D" were actually just whatever rules my older brother remembered (we didn't have our own copies of the rules, other than the Monster Manual, for quite a while). It was a lot like what's described here.
ReplyDeleteI remember him (as DM) asking me and my friends and I what we wanted to be, and then just making up character sheets on the spot. One of my friends was a ninja.
ReplyDeleteI drew my first dungeon before I had any books. I think I just had my character sheet to base everything off of. I knew monsters had hit points, armor classes, and damage dice. Then for a long time I had the PHB and DMG but no MM. I used the stats out of the DMG, which of course has no descriptions. I distinctly remember wondering what the heck a Demogorgon was. But my friend wanted to fight one because it was worth more XP than anything else.
ReplyDeleteI remember finding Gygax's use of "q.v." really confusing. What could it mean?
ReplyDeleteMuch better to have a few ideas than a bunch of bad ones : )
