Ok, my craving for Bernard Cornwell writing about shield walls cannot be quenched.
Ok, my craving for Bernard Cornwell writing about shield walls cannot be quenched. But the audiobook for The Last Kingdom has a huge waiting list, so I watched the first episode. Pretty good, obviously doesn’t have a huge budget, but it had this beautiful shot.
It's a decent show. Sometimes it does feel kind of low-rent, but I'm okay with that. I think it's gotten better in its second season, and while the performances are sometimes clunky, it's a hell of a lot more consistent than Vikings in terms of overall story.
ReplyDeleteThere was some good writing with the banter between the kid and the priest.
ReplyDelete“I never want to hear you say the name Odin again.”
“What if I name my dog Odin?”
And the bit with baptizing the kid again when he gets his new name so angels don’t get confused.
Pretty much all of the scenes involving Father Beocca are good.
ReplyDeleteAlso, when searching for gifs, the first several results are all our knock-off Jon Snow emerging shirtless and glistening from the water.
ReplyDeleteThe lead actor is probably a bit too pretty. The second season manages to grime him up a bit.
ReplyDeleteIt gets better and better, I'm very glad I stuck with it. My English friends are annoyed by the morphing place names, but I like it; I can look them up on the map, and it hammers home how old some of the settlements are.
ReplyDeleteI like the morphing names. Better to use the name from the time instead of the modern name, but like you said, it lets you look them up.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I like it alot. Some of the dialog, however, is wooden as hell. (Almost as wooden as their shield wall...)
ReplyDeleteThat's really pretty.
ReplyDeleteDude, I just finished the seventh book. I am whipping through chapters when I give my kid a bottle or put him to bed.
ReplyDeleteOnly two or three episodes into the show. I don't quite love how they turned him into a Jon Snow. Zakk Wylde would be far better approximation of Uhtred.
