Runequest (3e because that's what I have) Culture and Occupation tables to generate Backgrounds and available classes for 5e. Pick an appropriate skill and/or tools to be proficient in based on roll. I would require training in downtime between levels to multi-class. You wouldn't start with many spellcasters or rogues.
Culture (1d8)
1 Primitive
2, 3 Nomad
4-6 Barbarian
7, 8 Civilized
Primitive Backgrounds/Classes Available (1d6)
1, 2 Fisher - Barbarian, Ranger
3-5 Hunter - Barbarian, Ranger
6 Assistant Shaman - Bard, Druid
Nomad Backgrounds/Classes Available (1d20)

I like this idea.
ReplyDeleteYou know I would love to play a low-magic, Dark Ages game.
ReplyDeletePossible names for this far in the future game, Hoov:
ReplyDeleteDirt & Dung
Shit & Shield Walls
Bloody Flux
War Spear
Don't let it fade....
ReplyDeleteAll we'd need to do is add the ACKS injury table. don't have any magic items except very dangerous ones, as suggested in the "Sword and Sorcery" play style in the DMG. And have $$ be a common motivation. Imagine it - a party full of Barbarians, Fighters, Rangers!
ReplyDeleteI would like Warlord Chronicles style magic too. Nimue's "charm of concealment" etc. Want to cross a ghost fence? Make your save. Sacrifices or good auguries give advantage to a roll during a battle or something...
ReplyDeleteyeah, just anything low-magic. with those rolls required for anything magical (besides Sorcerer) magic will be rare enough. except for the bad-guys of course.
