i have 6 products with that cover - my favorite rpg ever
ReplyDeleteI like that RuneQuest has a tradition of serious badass women on their covers.
ReplyDelete3rd edition Runequest is the only version I have. I don't know anything about Glorantha except ducks and broo, but I love the late antiquity fantasy Earth setting of 3rd ed.
ReplyDeleteCasey G. Same here. I am almost completely ignorant of Glorantha.
ReplyDeleteEverything I know comes from Dragon magazine ads.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favourite RPG cover art of all time, and narrowly beats out the Ringworld boxed set cover art as almost the best of all time. RQ3 used to be my favourite version of BRP, but I have to say that the recent RQ6 (now named Mythras) is looking to beat that. Mythras is very, very solid. (It also has a bad-ass female warrior on the cover, but I still like the RQ3 cover art better.)
ReplyDeleteSo Mythras is Runequest, not a clone? I was wondering about that.
ReplyDeleteI thought Mythras was (essentially) a clone, and that Chaosium had reclaimed the RuneQuest name.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I know about the situation (this is all public knowledge, I believe):
ReplyDeleteOriginally The Design Mechanism had licensed the name from Chaosium to produce RuneQuest 6, which was Loz and Pete's successively refined design from their work originally at Mongoose for their RuneQuest (and then "Legend") lines.
TDM was originally being considered/consulted in some capacity to be doing the re-build of RuneQuest for Chaosium, who wanted to repatriate the brand, as part of their strategic plans post-Big-Rescue-Takeover by Greg and Sandy (and others).
Then the people at Chaosium made the decision that they wanted to do the re-design of RQ in-house, and TDM and Chaosium mutually parted ways on that work.
TDM was given a grace-period until their license on the RQ name ran out, and during that time, TDM re-branded RQ6 as "Mythras", and re-did the book design for the core rulebook; there may have been some very slight adjustments to the actual rules, but they're effectively completely compatible.
TDM now offers "Mythras" (the full complete rulebook) and "Mythras Imperative" (a cut-down, fully functional, 32 page rulebook that's effectively "Mythras Without Magic"). Both are available in PDF and hard-copy, and the Imperative rule-set is cheaply available and actually really, really useful.
Chaosium, meanwhile, has repointed "RuneQuest" to be strictly a Gloranthan game (i.e. which a stronger direct tie to Glorantha as the world background), release a quick-start/preview at GenCon this year, and is likely due to release the final rulebook late this year or early next.
The two sets of rules are reasonably different -- Mythras is intended to support a wider assortment of backgrounds, RuneQuest (just that, no version) is intended for BRP-based play in Glorantha.
mythras is Design Mechanism runequest with IP shaved off
ReplyDeletelegends id mongoose RQ with IP shaved off
lots of ppl have lost RQ IP
personally Im glad it is home
Thanks, guys. This is a corner of the RPG world I don't pay attention to. I will give Mythras a look.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the RuneQuest brand has always remained Chaosium property and was just licensed out for use, in a series of licenses, which kinda explains why it's hopped from company to company.
ReplyDeleteI too am happy to see RQ back in Chaosium's development hands; but I have less interest in Glorantha than I do in BRP-based fantasy on a solid, well developed set of rules.
Ergo, my (slight) preference for Mythras.
Casey G. I believe the Imperative PDF rules are PWYW. That's a great way to see if they're what you want. 8)
ReplyDeleteImperative has been downloaded. I'll take a look.
