Catching up on GoT, last episode we watched has a very nice scene of Jon Snow petting Drogon’s snout. I was very impressed by the effects, although there was still the feeling that Jon’s hand wasn’t actually touching something solid. But the animal itself looks great and seems alive. There was a decent amount of soft tissue moving around on its face and neck. I wonder if the show’s artists pay attention to paleoart? Here’s a long article on the “shrink-wrapping” of dinosaurs and other extinct critters.

Abby came downstairs while her mom and I were watching and we let her watch this scene so she could see the dragon. Her comments:
“Aww…that’s a cute dragon! Looks cooler than the Harry Potter ones.”
and
“I want to be a dragon queen.”

ReplyDeleteThese dragons are really nice. I've liked bat-type wing-walking ever since I saw the Jabberwock do it. The crest and neck frills give a nicely monstrous feeling of uncertainty in this shot (and many shots) where you're trying to figure out just how it's put together and which way it's looking. The whole thing looks like somebody thought about it very hard indeed.
ReplyDeleteThey managed to put together a design that's immediately obviously a dragon (i.e. it fits the icon/prototype of dragons) while also not just looking like a cliche. Watching these guys fly and lumber around I have the same feeling the cast keep telling me: I don't really know just how dangerous it is.
Vermithrax Perjorative, my favorite cinematic dragon, is more snake-like, and pulls herself along the ground. Shoulders are not skeletal:

Harry Potter dragons’ shoulders seem too shrink-wrapped. Their wings don’t realistically look like they could support their weight:

Finally read article, pleased by use of rugosity.
ReplyDeleteIf you shrink-wrap whales they look very strange indeed.
HP's dragons are a tough artistic call - they're supposed to be basically sympathetic but dangerous and they're not cool in the text. Nobody but Hagrid thinks dragons are charismatic. between that and the classical elements (centaurs etc) I don't envy the HP movie monster artists.
Because they don't have four legs? I don't see any other six-limbed tetrapods around, so I like my dragons wyvern-style.

ReplyDeleteThat was a cool article Casey.
