Finished The Pale Horseman, the second book of the Saxon Chronicles yesterday. One of the more evocative parts being a throwaway conversation while Uhtred is talking to Father Pyrlig about a burial mound and Pyrlig says there’s a dragon in it.

“I thought folk were buried there?”
“They are! And their treasures! So the dragon guards the hoard. That’s what dragons do. Bury gold and you hatch a dragon, see?”

One HD per thousand gold or something like that depending on your economy? And the terrain the gold is hidden in determines the type of dragon. The dragon grows by accumulating more treasure.

  1. Wow that's genius. Strong incentive to bury as much as you can, too, to prevent grave robbing.
