Casey reads Sense & Sensibility final post
Finished the book last week, so watched the movie with Mrs. G and Abby this weekend. I’d never seen it since I’d never been interested and Mrs. G and I aren’t the types to watch movies together if the other isn’t into it.
It was great! Casting was perfect. The Harry Potter movies are like a reunion for this cast, Madame Pomfrey, Dolores Umbridge, Professors Trewlany and Snape. I had to see where this fell in Kate Winslet’s career, first thing after Beautiful Creatures pretty much. So many floppy-haired Englishmen. Hugh Grant is so Hugh Granty I can hardly stand it. Alan Rickman is so stoic and constant.
Emma Thompson’s script and changes are all fine/justified for time. Not as funny as the book, except for Robert’s reveal, a hilarious change from the book that makes the end make sense for the movie. Ang Lee really got the formality, but for my part, could have turned up the dial on subverting romantic tropes. But I suppose because of Sense & Sensibility, turning those tropes around is a trope itself.
And Mrs. G practically forced Jane Eyre into my hands as reading material for our spring break vacation.
ReplyDeleteI rewatched this one recently as well! Along with Pride and Prejudice, I enjoyed both but this one was top notch. I blame Good Society, I’m sure I’ll rewatch then again once it comes out!
