I run tabletop RPGs, and in my current game one of the characters is a caveman type who naturally grew up hunting dinosaurs. As one does. His weapon is a dinosaur bone, customized and used as a club...let’s assume for the sake of this exercise that it is and that it is four feet long stem to stern. Given that, two questions: discounting the extra bling attached how heavy would such a bone be, and what kind of dinosaur could it have come from?

Finally, someone asking the really important questions.
ReplyDeleteOk. That's roughly 122cm. A human femur is 48cm and weighs roughly 261 grams. Your femur-club would be 2.5 times the size of a human femur. If the weigh is in the same scale, that would be 652.5 grams - a little more than 1.4 pounds. Even assuming a dino bone is much heaver, it would still be well under 3 lbs, I'm guessing.
ReplyDeleteUnless of course the bone is fossilized! :)
ReplyDeleteConsider that the 2.5 size multiplier needs to be applied 3 dimensionally. 2.5 times the length, the width, and the depth. 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 = 15.625... when accounting for bone density, and holding up a heavier creature maybe bump that up to 20 times the weight of a comparable human bone. In this case you're looking at a club closer to 5 kg (closer to 11lbs).

ReplyDeleteHa. I thought you asked the question and just put up a pic. I didn’t see the article. Holy hell! That guy went the distance!!
ReplyDeleteMichael Wenman well ... you were closer anyway.
ReplyDeleteMichael Wenman Oh, and FTR, I was actually thinking of something 2.5 times as long as a human femur, but not bigger around (so you could still hold it). I was guessing a small 'tail rib' or something.
