Americans invented/imported/stole 1,100 new baby names in 2017 according to this article. I made a random name generator out of the top 120 (minus Game of Thrones and Twilight names (Benjen is a stupid name in the book let alone real life, and Renessmae is unpronouncable, what’s wrong with people?))

I'm not saying Benjen is a good name, but it could be worse. Following Rickard and Eddard, it could have been Bennard (and we don't need more names that can be shortened to Nard).
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you pronounce Benjen with a "y" instead of "j", like in "jarl", then it still sounds silly, but at least it's less like a celebrity couple name.
Man, I feel old and cranky looking at that. To imagine that that's the list after you sanitized the dumb ones out is astounding. And I say this as someone who named his daughter Kivi.
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice that a Star Wars name sneaked on there. Jyn from Rogue One.
ReplyDeleteI think Douglas Adams would approve of that name if the middle name was Antonyx.
ReplyDeleteCasey G. Also "Kassian."
ReplyDeleteWhen we went to name our son Luke, my wife was like: “wait is Luke just from star wars or was it an older name.” I know she’s an atheist but dammit she went to catholic school as a child.
ReplyDeleteNoveah. Hahaha. A mispelled anagram of Heaven. What happened to good old fashioned names like Tequila and Crown (I'm crappin' you negative, my friend Corrinda named her kids after booze)?
ReplyDeleteFor the record, all of these are better than Ruger, Magnum, Arrow, Wesson, Caliber, Remington, and Gunner.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Trigger?
ReplyDeleteTrigger is fine...for a horse.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that naming a kid Archer seems a little passe, but Gunner is barbaric. (But not nearly as tacky as a brand name like Ruger.)
ReplyDeleteI guess for that matter, Gunnar (means warrior) vs. Gunner is interesting.
I have a friend whose last name is Hunter. I was really hoping him and his wife would have twin boys and name them Buck and Beau. They shot that idea down immediately.
