Review of a book I've only listened to a 3rd of
I got that Warhammer audio Humble Bundle because I do most of my "reading" as audiobooks these days. It's three novels and a bunch of hour long audio dramas. I started with Dark Imperium. I haven't read anything but a bit of Caiphus Cain, so nothing in the "main storyline" of 40k. I only knew what I've absorbed by nerd-osmosis over the years and by playing video games up until buying the new Dark Imperium boxed set and reading some codexes.

So the novel of Dark Imperium is pretty good if you are jumping into 40k right now. From the boxed set you learn about Guilimane and the Primaris marines, so you're a little ahead of the curve. What is great about the novel is that it makes Roboute Guilliman into a pretty good character instead of a hundred dollar $60 overpowered miniature. Also shocking that he's an actual "good guy" instead of the "least bad bad-guy" that the Imperium usually is. He's pretty disgusted by what the Imperium has become and wants to change it.

Also some super juicy bits that would make great games of Kill Team or an RPG. Guilliman is sending historians all over the galaxy to recover information so he can compile a true history of the Imperium in order to learn from the mistakes that have been made over the last 10,000 years. These historians would make great adventuring parties or small warbands. Opposed by fanatical Inquisitors and Chaos.

There are a lot of "grunt" level scenes as well. Subplots so far involve an UItramar guardsman on a hospital world and a Primaris Intercessor who is also a painter. Great stuff.

So, four hours listened out of twelve. Thumbs up.

  2. When my wife's bookstore closed down tney had a massive range of Warhammer novels, which all ended up becoming a part of our home library. I've put off reading them because it was just an intimidating mass of paper, and I didn't just want to read thousands apon thousands of pages of grimdark... your review is making me reconsider.

  3. If the Emperor had a Text-to-Speech Device has completely destroyed my ability to look at Ultramarines without breaking out into hysterical laughter.

  4. I’ve been listening to all the shorter books to start … which are very hit or miss.

Red & Black - so cheesy and predictable with so so writing.

Thorn Wishes Talon - Good, though kind of pointless vignette of Ravenor and his posse

Garro Oath of Moment - also felt kind of stupid. Like fan fiction.

Warmaster - super short monologue. Good?

Fabius Bile - short, feels like an intro to the dude.

Censure - Ultramarine getting revenge of World Bearers on Calth. Like a buddy cop film with a gaurdsmen. Enjoyable. Also cheesy though. Ha

I really like Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s books, but he wasn’t part of this bundle: Helsreach, Talons of Horus, Black Legion, First Heretic and Betrayer I liked.

  5. Glad this one is good. It’s the intro book for the new lore of 8th edition.
