Two Guns in D&D type games

Two Guns in D&D type games
Without resorting to bonuses to hit and damage.

Roll damage twice, keep higher.
or
"Excess" damage left after killing a target is applied to an enemy within 10 feet of the first.

  1. It is. I like the feel of the second one since it allows multiple targets. Needs a much more concise way of saying it.
"Excess damage is applied to a nearby enemy."

  2. Keith Senkowski because the job of the DM is denial!

  3. To use a next term - to hit rolls have advantage.
Damage - damage rolls are exploding.

  4. Moe Tousignant is advantage rolling twice to hit? I can't remember.
And I've decided gun damage explodes once. So a 1d8 weapon can do 16 points of damage, which is plenty to take out an average 3HD creature.

  5. Could also have damage spillover to nearby targets after the primary target dies as a result of the first attack.

  6. I like this. Elegant and easy to remember. Top notch!

  7. how about -4  or -10 to hit? cuz it's hard to shoot two guns.

  8. In warhamer40k dual wielding usually means twin linked, which lets you re-roll any miss once per attack. The second result must be accepted and you cannot re-roll a re-roll even if you have another ability that allows it.

Honestly I'd add the ability to re-roll to hit or to damage (but not both) for each attack, and pick the highest in the case of re-rolled damage.

  9. You know you need to make a class for this now.

    Chow Yun-Fat
Requirements: You must be a badass and a color-coordinated killer.

  10. Hoov, this is for the characters with the ability. If you don't have it, then you suck at it and don't bother because you'd be dumb to.

  11. Advantage is roll 2D20 at once and take the highest.

I was thinking of it as: two guns doesn't necessarily mean you do more damage but it does mean there's a lot more bullets in the air so there's a much better chance to hit. The exploding was to represent that sometimes more bullets can also mean more damage but not that often.

  12. I liked the offhand weapon rule in World of Dungeons - you can reroll damage with the offhand if you dislike the main hand damage roll. Slightly less forgiving than your first take.

  13. 13th Age has a pretty neat rule. If you are using a weapon in your offhand you follow the normal rules, but if you miss and the roll was a 2 you make an attack with the offhand weapon. Add in the mook rules (damage spills over from one mook to the next) and you've got the makings of 2-gun style.

  14. Maybe there is no ability for it?  Did I just blow your mind?  Muhwhaha!

  15. BTW, Keith Senkowski won this round. And for now the two-fisted rule applies to melee combat as well.
