From Voyageurs National Park on FB: Called “Catamaran” by locals, Bert Upton is among the strangest of historical characters on area waters. He lived in a hut built over a dug-out at Squirrel Narrows. Found frozen to death in the 1930s by Kettle Falls pioneer Oliver Knox; Upton was perched lifeless in the snow just a half-mile from his home. Shunning civilization, Upton defined the word hermit. First spotted rowing his crude log raft on Namakan, no one knows how he got there. Upton’s accent implied an English heritage but any personal inquiries brought a stony silence. Some suspected him a man fleeing the law; others saw a bizarre outcast; everyone knew he was peculiar. Just five feet tall and wildly unkempt, Catamaran wore hacked-off pants and walked barefoot with a stick. Winter demanded shoes but no socks, a cast-off Mackinaw, and a trailing cap made from the leg of old underwear. He was oddly religious, and suspicious of being poisoned. Surviving on snared rabbits and fish, he ofte...
My friend: "Is this one of those Law & Order episodes where the state trades immunity for what turns out to be squat?" (https://twitter.com/vivekster/status/847583813576269824)

I keep telling my daughter "snitches get stitches" as a joke when she rats me out to my wife. But now she's started repeating that and I'm worried she'll start saying it at school.
ReplyDeleteImagining your daughter saying that has made my night.
ReplyDeleteOh nothing will come of it - as long as Pence gets to see NIH's main concern becoming faith healing and menstrual tents, the House GOP helps make sure that the Koch bros pay a lower tax bill then your average unmarried teen mother and the CBP can keep shooting anyone they come across near the Mexican border it doesn't matter if Trump personally murders children for sick kicks (I don't think he does by the way). Nunes or whoever replaces him will make sure this investigation stumbles about and reports the White House line. I suspect this 'investigation' is more likely to end up with Hilalry and Obama in jail for 'crimes against the dignity of the state' then any actual jail time or political consequences for anyone in the GOP (well maybe the freedom caucus will be liquidated).
ReplyDeleteCmon, Gus! We can dream.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Gus is right, but ... it's kind of like buying a lottery ticket; it's just fun day-dreaming about having all that justice even if you know it just won't happen.
ReplyDeleteYep. Sigh.
