Ok, HexKit 2.

Image
Ok, HexKit 2.0 is much improved. I loaded up my gigantic dark age Britain map and it was way faster to tinker with. Also, new fonts and being able to change font sizes instead of adding bigger text in another program...awesome. Also, when I exported it, there are player or GM facing map options?!?! Excellent.

Spring Break Shenanigans

Image
Spring Break Shenanigans 30 seconds later Coop fell through the ice on a low spot off camera to the left up to his shins. When we stopped laughing and hauled him out, I had to carry him on my shoulders back to the car holding his bare feet in in my hands to keep them warm. Point: Nature.

Back to Aubrey/Maturin.

Back to Aubrey/Maturin. I had forgotten that The Yellow Admiral starts with a history lesson on the enclosure of the English commons. I feel like O’Brian’s opinions are put into Jack’s mouth, while Stephen, as usual, plays the part the reader asking for information. Except this time it’s not about a nautical term, it’s about land theft by aristocrats and the events that led to the industrial revolution. The pro-enclosure opinion is put in the mouth of an asshole admiral who dislikes Jack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enclosure

Good News Everyone!

Image
Good News Everyone! Stay Frosty went Silver on Drivethru! Thank you to everyone who has purchased it, played it, and reviewed it. So for many reasons I’m making it 40% off. 1. I want it to go Silver on RPGNow. If you’re going to buy it, buy it there. http://www.rpgnow.com/product/206742/Stay-Frosty 2. Woo! Silver! 3. I’m moving, and every bit helps pay the movers and such. Sale runs until moving day, April 19th. And if you’re inclined to share this sort of thing someplace besides G+, like Reddit or twitter, or other social media places I don’t understand, I’d be very thankful. Also, a new adventure is being playtested and once we’re settled in the new place, I’ll be working on it again.

Image
Casey reads Sense & Sensibility final post Finished the book last week, so watched the movie with Mrs. G and Abby this weekend. I’d never seen it since I’d never been interested and Mrs. G and I aren’t the types to watch movies together if the other isn’t into it. It was great! Casting was perfect. The Harry Potter movies are like a reunion for this cast, Madame Pomfrey, Dolores Umbridge, Professors Trewlany and Snape. I had to see where this fell in Kate Winslet’s career, first thing after Beautiful Creatures pretty much. So many floppy-haired Englishmen. Hugh Grant is so Hugh Granty I can hardly stand it. Alan Rickman is so stoic and constant. Emma Thompson’s script and changes are all fine/justified for time. Not as funny as the book, except for Robert’s reveal, a hilarious change from the book that makes the end make sense for the movie. Ang Lee really got the formality, but for my part, could have turned up the dial on subverting romantic tropes. But I suppose because of Sense

The Golden Book of Dinosaurs reminded me that I also had the Star Trek record/book Dinosaur Planet which nicely melds 50’s dinos and sci-fi. This title page is a thing of wonder. Also on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzxZ_uPCCZo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnLqw1XWTVU

I had this book. It might still be at my parent’s house. Big book, full color, super weird landscapes and skies that make the age of dinosaurs a completely alien world. This art fit right in with my obsession with 50’s sci-fi and the alien landscapes in movies like Forbidden Planet. Casey reads Sense & Sensibility

Casey reads Sense & Sensibility "Have you,” she continued, after a short silence, “ever seen Mr. Willoughby since you left him at Barton?” “Yes,” he replied gravely, “once I have. One meeting was unavoidable.” Elinor, startled by his manner, looked at him anxiously, saying, “What? have you met him to—” “I could meet him no other way. Eliza had confessed to me, though most reluctantly, the name of her lover; and when he returned to town, which was within a fortnight after myself, we met by appointment, he to defend, I to punish his conduct. We returned unwounded, and the meeting, therefore, never got abroad.” This link addresses my main question after I finished the book. http://janeactually.com/?p=264

Casey reads Sense & Sensibility Lucy Steele, you are a monster. So far, the D&D that S&S resembles most closely is Courtney Campbell's Perdition , since that has mental AC, mental HP, social attacks, and vendettas built right into it. The constant striving of the idle Georgian aristocracy for status is much like the devils constant infighting in the game.

I love UFO witness art.

I love UFO witness art. Originally shared by Al Tlön "In conspiracy culture, stories circulate telling of UFO crashes, government cover-ups, and secret agreements between the U.S. military and alien intelligences. In the UK some believe the Ministry of Defense (MoD) operate a “secret army against the aliens” and employ special agents—the legendary Men in Black or MIB—to silence witnesses and remove hard evidence of UFO visitations. But in 2007, after decades of stonewalling questions about its UFO investigations, the MoD announced that it had decided to proactively release all its surviving files. This was, it said, to counter “the maze of rumor and frequently ill-informed speculation” that surrounded their role in this subject. In recognition of the fact that there was public interest in the content of their archives, thousands of pages of formerly secret documents were scanned and uploaded to the Internet." https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2018/03/12/ufo-drawings-from-th

The Whale

Image
The Whale I don’t think I have anything to say about Moby Dick himself that wouldn’t sound like an American Lit 101 term paper. Moby Dick shows up in person very late in the book with the Pequod following a trail of destruction he leaves among other whaling ships. Ishmael discourses about the various meanings of the color white, both angelic and demonic soon after Ahab and his quest are introduced. It seems to me all of the malevolence is wrapped up in Ahab, and Moby Dick is just a big, ornery animal that you’d be smart to leave alone. I agree with Starbuck, the voice of reason on the Pequod: "Vengeance on a dumb brute!" cried Starbuck, "that simply smote thee from blindest instinct! Madness! To be enraged with a dumb thing, Captain Ahab, seems blasphemous." “Moby Dick seeks not thee. It is thou, thou, that madly seekest him!'' Going back to 10th grade literature, Ahab thinks he’s fighting the supernatural, but he’s actually fighting nature, and the magic ha

How To Forge a Magic Weapon

How To Forge a Magic Weapon "I, too, want a harpoon made; one that a thousand yoke of fiends could not part, Perth; something that will stick in a whale like his own fin-bone. There's the stuff," flinging the pouch upon the anvil. "Look ye, blacksmith, these are the gathered nail-stubbs of the steel shoes of racing horses." "Horse-shoe stubbs, Sir? Why, Captain Ahab, thou hast here, then, the best and stubbornest stuff we blacksmiths ever work." "I know it, old man; these stubbs will weld together like glue from the melted bones of murderers. Quick! forge me the harpoon. And forge me first, twelve rods for its shank; then wind, and twist, and hammer these twelve together like the yarns and strands of a tow-line. Quick! I'll blow the fire." When at last the twelve rods were made, Ahab tried them, one by one, by spiralling them, with his own hand, round a long, heavy iron bolt. "A flaw! rejecting the last one. Work that over again, Per

Moby Dick leads to a Player Character

Image
Moby Dick leads to a Player Character Ishmael/Melville says in chapter 56 of Moby Dick: But, taken for all in all, by far the finest, though in some details not the most correct, presentations of whales and whaling scenes to be anywhere found, are two large French engravings, well executed, and taken from paintings by one Garnery. Respectively, they represent attacks on the Sperm and Right Whale. In the first engraving a noble Sperm Whale is depicted in full majesty of might, just risen beneath the boat from the profundities of the ocean, and bearing high in the air upon his back the terrific wreck of the stoven planks. The prow of the boat is partially unbroken, and is drawn just balancing upon the monster’s spine; and standing in that prow, for that one single incomputable flash of time, you behold an oarsman, half shrouded by the incensed boiling spout of the whale, and in the act of leaping, as if from a precipice. The action of the whole thing is wonderfully good and true. Th
