Leap second got me thinking.

Leap second got me thinking. The fish of the Devonian Period experienced rather short days. We know that the Devonian year had 400 days, making each day only 22 hours long. Using lasers, we have confirmed this movement and found it to be 3.8 centimetres per year. This may seem too small to make a real difference, but when added up over hundreds of millions of years, we can calculate that the Moon is now twice as far from Earth as it was during Devonian time. As a consequence, Devonian tides were up to seven times larger than today’s tides. There's a #gameable sci-fantasy world for you. Huge tides, short days, and a gigantic moon hanging in the sky. http://www.miguasha.ca/mig-en/a_devonian_day.php

Now the rest of the country needs to follow suit. Originally shared by Yonatan Zunger In excellent news of the day, California SB277 has just been signed into law: all non-medical exemptions for school vaccination requirements are now gone. California has several hubs of people who have been refusing critical vaccinations based largely on rumors that They're Bad For You, and has had serious outbreaks of diseases like measles and pertussis as a result. No more. The personal and religious exemptions (basically, the "I don't wanna" exemptions) have been eliminated. I'm incredibly happy to see the state legislature move so quickly on an issue that put thousands of lives across the state at risk. http://www.mercurynews.com/health/ci_28407108/gov-jerry-brown-signs-californias-new-vaccine-bill
I love that Superhero movies are becoming like westerns.

I love that Superhero movies are becoming like westerns. At their height, westerns told all kinds of stories framed within the western genre. There were buddy movies, action movies, romances, tragedies, comedies, revenge movies, character studies, any kind of story could be made as a western. Now when we get a western, with very few exceptions, it’s got to hit every bullet point on some studio executive’s list of what they think a western needs. That’s why I didn’t like the 3:10 to Yuma remake from a few years ago. Here’s the gatling gun, here’s the apache attack, there’s the sociopath gunslinger, etc etc. The superhero genre won’t go stale until filmmakers forget that they can (and should) tell many kinds of story inside the superhero frame. With food and ammunition depleted and the men's hopes waning, the Germans unleashed a fresh onslaught of artillery and gunfire. The French troops cautiously peered over the top of their trenches. A large, black animal was bounding in their direction. From a distance it was difficult to tell exactly what the charging four-legged creature was. It was wearing a monstrous gas mask, and something was stretched across its shoulders that extended almost like wings. Then one of the soldiers, a handler named Duval, recognized the animal as his own—a messenger dog named Satan. Duval called out to the dog, urging him on. Leaping over the cratered earth, Satan raced toward the sound of his handler's voice so fast that some of the men later swore he was flying. Hail Satan Also, #gameable . Also, the story of how an animal companion was promoted to full PC. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/05/140516-dogs-war-canines-soldiers-troops-army-military/

I listened to the follow-up episode to Obama's interview with Maron yesterday. I really liked hearing from his producer, Brandon. His descriptions of how to he reacts to Maron's predictabe outbursts is hilarious. The explanation of how it all happened was really cool too, with the secret service sniper stomping on the garage roof, etc. http://potus.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_614_-_the_president_was_here/

Then at some point the snipers came. You saw these guys pull up, and it was like, okay. These are the dudes with the big guns. Then they went up on my neighbor Dennis’ roof. Poor Dennis. Dinosaur is actually a flightless bird, which means it's a dinosaur that is descended from another dinosaur that flew. There was a long time where if you were walking around the paleozoic, you would not have been able to distinguish between a "bird" and a "non-bird." Especially one that was secondarily flightless. http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/tetrapod-zoology/balaur-is-flightless-bird

I'm sorry, Jurassic World, baby, I didn't mean what I said before. . . . . . . Your raptors are featherless, and talking about how the dinos have always been hybrids and would look different in real life was a nice throw-away explanation, but when the original literally talks about dinosaurs and birds once every five minutes, I give you no points. Indominus rex is...a big allosaurus thing that can change color. Not super exciting. Hire some actual paleoartists next time. Your escaped pterosaurs scene was fucking stupid . If they all escaped they'd go fly around and maybe eat some fish. And was there no hotel? Why was everyone milling around outside? But... Bringing back Henry Wu: brilliant. Easter egg of someone reading a book by Ian Malcom: brilliant. Body count: Super high. Diplodocus getting an Oscar worthy death scene: brilliant. Raptors sudden but inevitable betrayal: hilarious. And of course the Primal Rage worthy end fight. T-Rex had just a sliver of health left, t
It's time for this ridiculousness. I brought two kids to terrorize, so I feel better about it.

Scarlet Heroes: Road Hogs Session 1

Scarlet Heroes: Road Hogs Session 1 Bad Bart the road warrior is hired by the Highway Dept. to scout a new route to La Segunda Pregunta. One hex out, he ran into a giant mutant plant that had grown across the highway and got stuck. Remembering there was a compound of vultures that lived nearby, he went to ask them for help freeing his ride. They wouldn't even let him in. But through the view slit, Bart glimpsed a garage and shed where he might find tools to get his car free. He sneaked back in the night, and into the unguarded garage. Unguarded, but equipped with an alarm... Running for it, Bart jumped the fence, but flying vulture guards intercepted him. Bart easily fought them off. He reached his car and freed it before the vultures caught up with him. He burned rubber down the highway.
In penance for going to a movie starring scaly genetic freaks instead of dinosaurs, here's a beautiful, up to date...

Weird animal things I’ve learned lately: Moa had no wings at all. Not even little stubby things like an emu. Frogs have no ribs. Seems like I should have remembered that from dissecting one. A vertebrate not having ribs is really strange. Mountain lions/cougars are not big cats , they are very large little cats.

Just flipped through the pdf. Perfect. Can't wait to get the physical book. Originally shared by Grandmother Fish Grandmother Fish is at the printer, and we can now share with you a PDF of the book with the final art. Karen has done a wonderful job with the art, putting more time into it than either of us had expected. We’re very excited to share the final version of the book with you. The image below is a page that you’ve never seen in color before. And here is the URL to the entire PDF. http://bit.ly/fishdraft The physical books will be back from the printer in early August. Now that we have the final art, we can also create the sticker sheets, bookmarks and limited edition prints that many backers are receiving. It’s going to be an exciting summer for Grandmother Fish ! We are looking for education-oriented nonprofits to which we can donate over 100 copies of Grandmother Fish . We have 35 designated for Camp Quest, and we are looking for other organizations, too.
