Abby is watching ANT Farm on Netflix, which is normally a horrible show.

Abby is watching ANT Farm on Netflix, which is normally a horrible show. But this episode has the principal stealing the personalities of the kids and turning them into frozen yogurt. Chyna eats the yogurt and the kids personalities inhabit her brain. The view inside her brain has banks of computers labelled with D&D ability scores. I saw Wisdom, Dexterity, and Constitution.

I’m bored, so here’s a weird dinosaur for you. Nigersaurus’s head is shaped like a vacuum cleaner. This straight row of tiny teeth never stops replacing itself. You can see how many are waiting their turn to rotate to the front in one of the pics. I imagine these things just never stopped browsing. Head down and eating all the time. No need to #rollforinitiative  I don't think. It's too busy eating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigersaurus

Parent Post

Parent Post My 10 year old daughter is immersed in Google products at school and at home. She's got a chromebook and google ID through school, and she's got a gmail address and chromebook at home. She uses Drive everyday, sharing stories and presentations back and forth with her friends. The other day she drew a picture and shared it with me through G+. Now I'm sharing cute animal gifs people post with her on G+. The point of this story is that I quickly figured out how to exclude my "family" circle from who can see stuff I post to "all circles."

Lots of people sharing this this morning. I'm going to as well as a reminder to myself.

Lots of people sharing this this morning. I'm going to as well as a reminder to myself.  One thing I'll add is Patrick Wetmore's house rule on replacement characters. New characters start at one level below the deepest dungeon level reached. So if you die on the 4th level of the dungeon, your new character is 3rd level. This is a non-railroady way of keeping the focus on the megadungeon. The party can go off and do whatever, but as insurance they might want to press on and open up that next dungeon level. And before the rules lawyers ask, no you can't start a new character at a higher level than your old one was. The best you can do is come back at the same level you were before. Originally shared by John Arendt I've been meaning to do this for a while - put together a list of principles that define my approach to building out megadungeons.  I've been running this style of game for a few years now.

Panorama of the awesome mural of Double Ditch at the North Dakota Heritage Center.

Image
Panorama of the awesome mural of Double Ditch at the North Dakota Heritage Center. Double Ditch was a Mandan village of 10,000 on the banks of the Missouri from 1490-1785. Abandoned when Smallpox decimated the population. Despite being a Anthropology/Archaeology major at a North Dakota University , I'd never seen a view like this before. The most we usually ever see is a recreation of a lodge, not what the city looked like in its prime. Also useful as reference for your non-european roleplaying settings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Ditch

Monument Valley, I give you 3.

Image
Monument Valley , I give you 3.5 stars. So close to greatness. Style and gameplay are excellent. The minimalist storytelling was nice, but would have been better if they’d not had the little guru ghosts trying to give you tiny nuggets of backstory through terrible writing. No dialogue at all was necessary. The puzzles varied wildly in quality. Some were very good, especially once you start spinning shapes to make new connections. Some of the middle puzzles were just not really puzzles. Just following along opening the next section. They were pretty, but not challenging.

Today I learned that male elephant seals can bite each other so viciously that they’ve evolved a “chest shield” of hardened skin to protect themselves. So here’s a real case of an animal who’s AC differs depending on where you attack it. #andnowyouknow   #rollforinitiative   #horrifyingnature

OSR thoughts about Riders of the Purple Lotus

Image
OSR thoughts about Riders of the Purple Lotus I’ve drawn a lot of pictures now, I think it’s time to do some more rules-type thinking. I’ve decided there will be just one saving throw that is modified by whatever stat bonus seems applicable. Str for grabbing onto a ledge, Con for poison, Wis for mind control, Dex to avoid a pit, etc. I’m trying to decide if a first level character’s save target # should start at 15 or 16. I’ve got one character class (sort of). I’ve got the hit die at a d6 right now, but I wonder if that should be a d8. I’ve got pistol damage at d8. Just feels like there should be some parity between the most common weapon damage and HD. Level/HD is such a useful number. Level is your attack and save bonus. Same for monsters and their HD. Defense (not AC, since cowboys don’t wear armor unless it’s a stove plate) starts at 14 (ascending) to get around the no-armor thing. Modified by special abilities, Dex, and at higher levels possibly artifacts the character has discov

More Mary Anning for her birthday.

Image
More Mary Anning for her birthday. This is the Ichthyosaurus species, Temnodontosaurus, she and her brother discovered. It was not the first ever found, but it was the first ever seriously studied. Of course no one writing papers on it ever mentioned who had collected it and meticulously prepared the fossil. The only person worth mentioning was the rich lord who bought it from Anning. This thing was 40 feet long. Totally worthy of a #rollforinitiative . Another fun fact, Mary Anning was the first one to suggest that the fossilized masses of fish bones found in the abdomen of ichthyosauruses were actually fossilized shit. Coprolites. It’s serendipitous that I just learned that before Mary discovered what they really were, they were called bezoar stones. Abby and I just read the part of Harry Potter where Professor Snape asks Harry what a bezoar was. They were traditionally thought to counteract poison. It is so amusing to me to imagine some old-timey lord dropping a hunk of fossilized

Hey, you should really click on the Google Doodle today.

Image
Hey, you should really click on the Google Doodle today. It’s Mary Anning’s birthday. Since the kids and I have been on such a dinosaur kick, we've been reading a lot of dino-related kids’ books. Any book that talks about Mesozoic sea reptiles will talk about Mary Anning. But mostly her childhood, not her adult life. Her Wikipedia page is pretty detailed. When she was a kid she started collecting fossils on the coast of England near her home. Her discoveries helped kickstart the science of paleontology. Predictably, because she was a woman AND not an Anglican she wasn't allowed to participate in the scientific community.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Anning This painting was done based on her fossil finds. I love these old views of prehistoric animals. They belong in a monster manual.
