Kid Post

Image
Kid Post Tomorrow is my daughter's tenth birthday. Holy crap. Ten years ago right now my wife and I were half watching Bram Stoker's Dracula between her contractions. We'd already been sent home from the hospital because she wasn't far enough along. The kid wouldn't come until the next morning, after 20 hours of labor. And just like Dracula, it ended with copious amounts of screaming and blood. But we came out of it with a smart and funny girl who's going to grow up to look a lot like Lucy here.

What the hell, it's almost Halloween, so I just bought Pandemonio.

What the hell, it's almost Halloween, so I just bought Pandemonio . I check out and there's an author's note from Rafael Chandler thanking me for picking it up. Never seen one of those before. Raphael is the nicest gorehound you'll ever circle. It's also pay what you want, but of course I paid $6.66. http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/121027/Pandemonio

Conversations with a 10 year old "What is it?" "The Yellow Sign." "What's it do?" "Let's someone take over your mind and drive you insane." "Cool." "Yeah, no one is going to know what it is, but I think it turned out pretty good." "Maybe one person will know." "They'd have to be at least as big a nerd as I am." "Yeah, that's probably not going to happen."

How Bass Reeves Made Me Weep For America

How Bass Reeves Made Me Weep For America Lots of people sharing that Bass Reeves post this morning. That's great. No where near enough people know about Bass. I learned about him from the book mentioned in the post: Bad News for Outlaws . My wife worked for the book's publisher in 2010 when it was printed. She didn't work on it, but had seen a proof and said I'd love it. We bought a copy when it was published (if you work for a publisher, you can buy anything for like $2.00. We've got so many kids books. We'd buy whole series at a time). Anyway, I thought it was really cool and was pretty into western miniatures at the time. I was painting and converting a lot of weird west stuff. I also spent a lot of time on miniatures forums. So I started a post about Bass in the western section of a popular website. I said I'd never heard of Bass before and isn't it crazy that here's an african american old west hero 99% of people have never heard of, etc, etc. I...

There is so much so wrong here that I scarcely know where to begin.

Originally shared by Andreas Schou There is so much so wrong here that I scarcely know where to begin. Should we be more outraged by Battelle’s decision to license, rather than open-source, code developed with taxpayer money? By their breathtakingly broad patent application? By the idea that their belatedly-registered copyright should apply to similar code written independently in different languages? By the amazing contention that an open-source version of a network visualization tool would have “national security implications”? Or by the notion that those who call themselves “hackers” are advertising to the world their intent to break the law? Via Jon Evans  http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/26/the-war-on-hackers/

Why I'm Paying Ex Bono For A Former Client: Battelle v. Southfork

Originally shared by Andreas Schou Why I'm Paying Ex Bono For A Former Client: Battelle v. Southfork As anyone who's been following my stream for the past week knows, late last week, an Idaho security startup -- Southfork Security -- was recently the subject of an unprecedented ex parte data seizure and injunctive order. Between competitors in a single industry, this might be relatively normal. It might be the kind of case which would be worth hashing out at length and enriching the lawyers. But instead, the day I found out, I sent $500 to my ex-client's legal defense fund. I'm going to send another $500 bucks today. And because I can't take his case pro bono , and am not his lawyer with respect to any related issue, if this drags on, I'm going to keep sending his legal defense fund $500 until I've refunded every last dime he's paid me in legal fees.  That's how important this is to me. And here's why: Battelle Isn't A Competitor. It's ...

Southfork is at a tremendous economic disadvantage in this case. As a new small business, it is simply impossible to defend ourselves against a government contractor of Battelle's size. Alex Mayo was talking about how the Dresden Files seems like weak-sauce.

Alex Mayo was talking about how the Dresden Files seems like weak-sauce. Here's my recommendation for "Urban Fantasy" or whatever you want to call it. I can only describe this series as badass. Charlie Huston brings the gore and the horror and the terribleness. His straight up crime novels are even better, but if you want vampires and zombies running around being fucking monsters, this is it right here. http://www.amazon.com/Already-Dead-Joe-Pitt-Novel/dp/034547824X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382628679&sr=8-1&keywords=joe+pitt+series+charlie+huston

OSR Spells and Player vs. Character Knowledge

Image
OSR Spells and Player vs. Character Knowledge Some spells do weird non-obvious things. Like purify water destroys water weirds utterly. How are people balancing what the character knows when you might have a player who never read the Monster Manual vs. a player who has it and every monster weakness memorized? This is where a Dungeoneering skill check or some such would come in in later editions. Do you call for an intelligence check? Not give any clues? Assume the character would know even if the player doesn't? Allow bardic knowledge? Something else?

You know the drill.

You know the drill. events/c2f4l5giliv0r1u72dnpd5c6rvc?authkey=CIHj5vPi47PNYQ
