Great article. There was an article about avocadoes recently that talked about the same subject.  Originally shared by Erin Kane What can you do when you are an ecological anachronism? "Consider the fruit of the Osage-orange, named after the Osage Indians associated with its range. In the fall, Osage-orange trees hang heavy with bright green, bumpy spheres the size of softballs, full of seeds and an unpalatable milky latex. They soon fall to the ground, where they rot, unused, unless a child decides to test their ballistic properties." There are some trees I saw near the edges of the Tai Forest with big spikes on them, going up maybe 12 feet (4 meters or so). They were too big to be painful when I touched them, and squirrels used them as handholds. I couldn't figure out quite what to make of it, and then I remembered that until pretty recently, the forest was full of elephants who were probably very destructive if you were a tree that they wanted to rub against, or someth

Here’s another prehistoric antagonist for you.

Image
Here’s another prehistoric antagonist for you. Prestosuchus was a large Triassic rauisuchian predator. That means it was giant crocodile looking thing that ran with its legs directly below it, like a mammal or dinosaur, instead of sprawled out like a lizard. Basically a giant croco-tiger. They dominated the large predator niches during the Triassic. At this time, dinosaurs were just small things if a predator, or medium sized if a herbivore. It wasn’t until the great extinction at the end of the Triassic when Prestosuchus and its cousins died out that dinosaurs could truly begin to rule the world.  If you need a model for a more animal-like dragon relative, Prestosuchus fits the bill. They look like some of the art for the 3e and 4e D&D drakes. They’d make good mounts for lizardmen or other reptilian humanoids. In any case, #rollforinitiative  . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestosuchus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rauisuchia

Hey, you know what Star Wars? GI Joe totally killed your toy sales. Kung Fu grip forever. #yojoeday   Special Missions 22 No toy commercial here. This is another hostage rescue issue. There seem to be a lot of these. Chuckles, Lady Jaye, Hit and Run, Shockwave are staking out a house where three terrorists have taken a family hostage. One holds a child in his room upstairs, and the other two, a man and a woman, hold the husband and wife in the kitchen. This is kind of a “and now we know!” story. It’s about not making snap judgments about people based on appearances. The terrorists killed 17 people at an airport before escaping and taking their hostages. They were wearing ski-masks, so the only way to identify them is by the horrifying grin on one of them. Hit and Run thinks he sees the same grotesque grin as he looks in the house through his binoculars.  Lady Jaye disguises herself as a makeup saleswoman and knocks on the door. A pretty blonde woman answers the door and Lady Jaye han

Stupid Poker Gunfight Rules

Image
Stupid Poker Gunfight Rules Each Gunfighter is dealt a number of cards to make a poker hand with. PCs and Major NPCs Greenhorns get 5. Cowpokes get 6. Gunfighters get 7. Legends get 8. Others Minor NPCs get 4. Groups of henchmen get 4. They all use the same hand but can attack up to as many PCs as are in their group of henchies. Each “step” your hand is better than your opponents, you do a point of damage. Damage removes cards from your opponent’s hand until they have zero cards. For groups of henchmen, each point of damage removes 1 henchman until they are all dead. Need something to bring in raising the stakes, bluffing, and jokers. Maybe jokers are wild and always add a level of damage. Maybe a raise means you do an extra point of damage if you win, but if you lose, you take an extra point of damage. Ties mean you both take damage. Not #RotPL  but maybe.

Speaking of minis games involving space tanks. Here’s one of my abandoned projects. I’ve got a lot of 15mm GZG sci-fi stuff. Some of it is painted, enough for one army, but my t-rex alien opponents are not painted. I would use Ambush Alley’s Tomorrow’s War if I ever got around to this. Every once in a while I consider putting all this on E-bay. Flickr link to all the pics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/hexxenhammer/sets/72157622561801107/

Twin Cities Post

Twin Cities Post I've got a buddy who is moving to the city with his family. He is looking for a realtor who is, and I quote, "not a complete tool." Thanks to the housing crash I've been in my place for 14 years and my realtor retired. Do you know or are you a non-toolish realtor? Minneapolis/West suburbs area. Thanks in advance.

Parent Post: Co-writing stories

Parent Post: Co-writing stories As a part of our effort to improve our daughters reading and writing, we've started co-writing stories with her. We trade off writing sentences. Abby and I started ours yesterday. This was actually really fun, and didn't seem like homework to Abby, or "parenting" to me. It was more a game. I did have to do a little prodding for action instead of just reaction to what I was writing, but then she got into the swing of it with action and jokes. I think this is hilarious. Title came after we were done for the night. Abby starts off and the last three sentences are all her's because she had to finish her joke. Dinosaur Attack One day I was riding my bike. At first I thought it would just be a normal ride. But it was not! I went around the corner by my friend Ginny’s house, and there was a Tyrannosaurus Rex eating her dog! I was so scared I screamed “AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!” My scream made the T-Rex turn its head toward me! I rode my bike as fa

Coop and I hit the Ultimate Dinosaurs exhibit at the Science Museum again, then stopped by the FLGS, Source Comics and Games. Here are our respective purchases, which I think compliment each other nicely. Coop only wanted this Quetzalquotalus eating a baby sauropod. "He eat naughty baby dinosaurs." That's terrifying, Coop. And I got DCC, because that $5 pdf made me. And they still had $40 copies. Are the newer printings $60? Their didn't seem to be any difference, aside from the variant cover.

Gygaxian Democracy

Image
Gygaxian Democracy Hey, I need a few quick weird occurrences for a city haunted by an evil presence for tonight’s session. I’m adapting a 3e adventure for ACKS, and it’s railroady. To make it less so, I want to roll on a list as the PCs wander around town. Just quick things, could be some combat, but mostly not. Maybe require a save. I’ve got: *Gargoyle starts to fall of church, threatens to crush children. *Mug of ale slides across table of own accord and starts a bar-fight. *Beggar mutters, “It’s eyes are everywhere! Beware!” and then starts talking in an undecipherable language. What else?

Because I'm in a dinosaur mood, two pictures of Cryolophosaurs I took at the Ultimate Dinosaurs exhibit. Cryolophosaurus is a large early Jurassic theropod from Antarctica who lived about 190 million years ago. Think about the time scale for a second. T-Rex lived at the end of Cretaceous, 65 MYA. It’s separated from Cryolophosaurus by around 130 million years, twice the time that has passed since non-avian dinosaurs went extinct. That’s incredible. Anyway, Cryolophosaurus is cool for many reasons, number one, its awesome pompadour crest, which gave it the nickname “Elvisaurus.” They should have just named it that. On the PBS show, Dinosaur Train , there’s a Cryolophosaurus named King who talks like Elvis and sings rockabilly tunes about dinosaurs. But he’s kind of agoraphobic and gets nervous when his fans start to crowd him.  The other awesome thing about Cryolophosaurus is that it’s from Antarctica. It’s fossils came out of a glacier. That’s badass. In the Jurassic, Antarctica wa

#yojoeday  eases the pain. Special Missions 21 This issue is pretty much a giant set up for the punch-line on the last page. A bunch Joe nobodies (except Tunnel Rat) are hunting down Cobra in the sewers of New York. Larry Hama gets to show off some NYC trivia with the gimmick of one of the Joes using a tourist guidebook to provide useful information for the team. It seems Cobra is installing nerve gas bombs in the sewers and the fuses are too tricky to disable. The Joes chase the Cobras through the sewers until they meet a group of homeless people living in the still-posh underground home of a turn-of-the-century aristocrat, a-la Lex Luthor in the Superman movie. The homeless people are led by Sgt. Gamble, a WWII vet who despises surface-dwellers for abandoning veterans like him. One of the barely-a-character Joes lets us know how Hama feels about whining like that. Tunnel Rat appeals to him as a fellow grunt, and Sgt. Gamble agrees to help the Joes. After an encounter with an albino s
