Finished The Pale Horseman , the second book of the Saxon Chronicles yesterday. One of the more evocative parts being a throwaway conversation while Uhtred is talking to Father Pyrlig about a burial mound and Pyrlig says there’s a dragon in it. “I thought folk were buried there?” “They are! And their treasures! So the dragon guards the hoard. That’s what dragons do. Bury gold and you hatch a dragon, see?” One HD per thousand gold or something like that depending on your economy? And the terrain the gold is hidden in determines the type of dragon. The dragon grows by accumulating more treasure.

Maze Rats ASE

Image
Maze Rats ASE Yesterday was my monthly Maze Rats game with the kids. They were still in the Land of a Thousand Towers version of the Moathouse, lair of the Wizard Monsator and full of genetically modified humanoid crops. A pumpkin ogre gave them little trouble, but some tougher fruits and vegetables killed poor Finny the Moktar. Here we see his sister, Poppy, exact her revenge on the pineapple that killed her brother. Finny was replaced by Terrifying Elf the elf.

Is it just me, or is carving pumpkins more of an ordeal than an entertaining activity?

Hmm...does this map need more hillforts? Let me just google "british hillfort map". Holy crap! So, instead of hillforts on the map, you just ask, how close is the nearest hillfort based on the terrain? https://hillforts.arch.ox.ac.uk/

Shit & Shieldwalls Hex-Kit map of dark ages Britain done-ish. I might add some unlabeled ruins and other features, but maybe not. Instead of adding coordinates to each hex, I might just add them across the edges so you can cross-reference.

I don't see much of a mystery. #lizardpeople2020 #lizardpeoplenewworldorder Originally shared by Ancient Origins Around 7,000 years ago, the Ubaidian culture created numerous statuettes depicting men, women, and even babies as lizard-like creatures. According to archaeologists, their postures, such as a female figure breast-feeding, do not suggest that they were ritualistic objects. So what did these lizard figures represent? #lizardmen #ubaid https://buff.ly/2yNoWnL

Shit & Shieldwalls

Shit & Shieldwalls Always thinking about the next campaign instead of the one I'm playing. Wrote up a short timeline for Shit & Shieldwalls after deciding that including King Arthur has too much baggage. Going a bit earlier, with the chaos that follows most of the Briton nobility being killed by Saxon treachery during the Treachery of the Seax. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treachery_of_the_Long_Knives The PC's would be guards of Eldol of Glevum, legendary sole survivor of the massacre. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldol,_Consul_of_Gloucester Start with a set-piece battle, then into the hex-crawling and domain stuff as the PCs establish their reputations and attract followers of their own. Timeline 407: Constantine III withdraws Roman legions from Britain. They do not return. 410: Britons expel last Roman bureaucrats. Traditional tribal Briton kingdoms established. 420: Picts attack Britain from the north. 425: Scotti land on the western shore and conquer it. 446: Year

Need

Need In 2017 zoologist Dani Rabaiotti's teenage brother asked her a most teenaged question: Do snakes fart? Stumped, Rabaiotti turned to Twitter. The internet did not disappoint. Her innocent question spawned the hashtag #doesitfart and it spread like a noxious gas. Dozens of noted experts began weighing in on which animals do and don't fart, and if they do, how much, how often, what it's made of, what it smells like, and why. Why do hyena farts smell especially bad? What is a fossa, and does it fart? Why do clams vomit but not fart? And what is a fart, really? Pairing hilarious illustrations with surprisingly detailed scientific explanations, Does it Fart? will allow you to shift the blame onto all kinds of unlikely animals for years to come. https://www.amazon.com/Does-Fart-Definitive-Animal-Flatulence/dp/1786488264 https://www.amazon.com/Does-Fart-Definitive-Animal-Flatulence/dp/1786488264

Today wikipedia diving taught me about the Cod Wars.

Today wikipedia diving taught me about the Cod Wars . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod_Wars On 5 September 1972, at 10:25,[58] ICGV Ægir, under Guðmundur Kjærnested's command, encountered an unmarked trawler fishing northeast of Hornbanki. The master of this black-hulled trawler refused to divulge the trawler's name and number and, after being warned to follow the Coast Guard's orders, played Rule, Britannia! over the radio.[3] At 10:40, the net cutter was deployed into the water for the first time, and Ægir sailed along the trawler's port side. The fishermen tossed a thick nylon rope into the water as the patrol ship closed in, attempting to disable its propeller. After passing the trawler, Ægir veered to the trawler's starboard side. The net cutter, 160 fathoms (290 m) behind the patrol vessel, sliced one of the trawling wires. As ICGV Ægir came about to circle the unidentified trawler, its angry crew threw coal as well as waste and a large fire axe at the Coast

Saga

Saga British victory! The Dux Bellorum ability allowed the Briton warlord and his companions to break through the Saxon line and attack their warlord. They failed to kill him on their turn, but on the Saxons' turn the melee went against them, and without any friendly units to sacrifice, their warlord went down. Death to the invaders.

I had a bit of inspiration for my far-future-maybe-never-happen Dark Ages domain-heavy game, Shit & Shieldwalls.

Image
I had a bit of inspiration for my far-future-maybe-never-happen Dark Ages domain-heavy game, Shit & Shieldwalls . When two shieldwalls face off, how can we make the outcome something other than the luck of the rolls or sheer numbers? How might you simulate the momentum of battle, or the determination of the warriors? I’m thinking of a variation on Stress from Perdition which gives escalating bonuses. But here we’ll call it Battle Joy . It has six levels. Battle Joy 1. Will defend in a shieldwall 2. Will attack in a shieldwall 3. AC bonus 4. Morale bonus 5. Critical Hit on 19-20. 6. 2nd attack I haven’t decided on a method of mass combat, so this is just spitballing. I have a more concrete idea of what increases your warband’s Battle Joy. These can increase Battle Joy one time each before battle starts: Defending Home – at a local, not national level. Greater Numbers – If your warband is at least 50% larger than your enemy. Getting Drunk – also induces some sort of penalty, but us

Because I can’t get enough testosterone-soaked historical fiction lately, I’m listening to The Last Kingdom. Finally got the audiobook from the library. I think it got popular after the show came out. The wait is not as long for the rest of the books thankfully. Really satisfies the craving for hot shieldwall-on-shieldwall action. And different enough from the show that I don’t think either spoils the other.

3030 Deathwar is right up my alley. Lucasarts style interactions and animation, Star Control 2 style exploration and combat (top down 2D), tons of kinds of missions so you can do what you like and usually avoid stuff that doesn't appeal to you. The plot progresses but you usually get to choose when to pursue it. Oh, and here I'm talking to the cop that just let my robot buddy out of jail and gave him a balloon.

Last night Abby’s high school swim team won their conference with an undefeated record.

Image
Last night Abby’s high school swim team won their conference with an undefeated record. Her team were the visitors and it was the last regular season meet for the senior swimmers. The home team had a ceremony during the break, honoring all the seniors on Abby’s team, and gave them flowers. After the results were announced, and the home team knew they’d lost at their own pool, they still did a cheer for Abby’s team. And Abby’s team gave them a cheer in return. During the meet, swimmers regularly shook hands after the race, congratulating each other on their effort. I saw plenty of tears and hugs on the losing team, but they held it together until it was all over. A hard loss, I’m sure. Sports(wo)manship was off the charts. The kids are all right.

Pre-gen from Frank Mentzer's module, The Needle , 1987. I knew this was insulting and gross when I was 14. At the time I didn't know who Frank was, since I only played AD&D. I found this module again when I was going through a box of old stuff and was surprised he wrote it, because I thought it was a pretty shitty adventure.

Abby and I finished season 1 of Stranger Things this weekend (I’d watched it, she hadn’t). Abby loves Eleven and the kids, because how can you not, but she really loved Nancy and Hopper. So in the trailer for the new season when Hop throws Nancy a rifle “and she just swings it up like BAM, ” Abby’s hype levels went off the charts.
