In the "Why Should I Trust You" section: There are certainly finer game authors and more elegant publishers, but I execute like a Jacobin- because getting a job done on time and to spec is its own special sort of beauty. Kevin is being modest in the first point, and completely accurate with the second. This will be delivered early. A 1 on 1 OSR game. You know you need it. Originally shared by Kevin Crawford The Scarlet Heroes Kickstarter is now live. This old-school game of sword & sorcery adventure is designed to allow a single player and GM to use classic modules and newer OSR content without changing the material or buffing the lone hero. It's a fully stand-alone game in 128 pages, but it also serves as a smooth overlay for many other OSR games that you might want to play with just a single hero. As with my last successful Kickstarter, Spears of the Dawn, backers have immediate access to the layout and text-complete beta. Back it, download it, and be reading it wit

Last session it was explosive runes , this week it's this: This shrine houses the candelabra and a small, black statue of the cleric’s demon-god. The statue is worth 2,500 gp because of its workmanship, but any person touching and carrying it is 1% likely cumulative per day to attract the attention of a Demon, Type I-VI (roll 1d6 to determine type). We'll see if they find it and I'll have to track how long they've got it if they do. Pic is Pazuzu, Assyrian demon god of wind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pazuzu

Gaming Synchronicity

Gaming Synchronicity   Players are in the temple of vampire lizardman. One player thinks this is really hard (he's right) and wants to go fight hill giants. I remind them they can do whatever they want.  Same player also wants to upgrade his magic axe Blooddrinker . Making magic items requires parts from monsters totalling XP equal to the GP cost of the item. The axe is named Blooddrinker . Therefore I decree it requires 10,000 xp worth of vampire fangs.  There are four vampires in the temple that equal about 10,000 xp.

#yojoeday  again! This one is firmly in the "only pre-9/11" category. Special Missions 9 We start with the Joes and a CIA dude trading Stinger missiles to mujahideen for Russian Spetznaz prisoners. The Joes disguise themselves as Russians, and pretend to free the Soviets. Maintaining the fiction, they send the Spetznaz on a suicide mission to kidnap an American CIA agent being held in Iran. The Joes can't do it themselves, so they are tricking the russians into doing it. In the end, the russian soldiers figure it out, and turn the tables on the Joes. But everyone gets what they want. But the story isn't the most interesting thing about this issue. It touches on several of Larry Hama's favorite themes: -"Uncle Sugar" buying loyalty from whoever is convenient. -A lovingly detailed description of the starting procedure for the Ju52, which shows Hama's love of hardware and his research for accuracy. -Soldiers with compassion for their fellow soldiers. ACKS Campaign Future Plotting

ACKS Campaign Future Plotting Just some notes about how I will be making my PC's lives difficult in my Against the Giants campaign. That's almost a misnomer, as they've been too low level to take on the giants directly. But if they survive the Tomb of the Lizard King, this is what they will face: Istvin taken over by werewolves. Oytpass Keep destroyed by Chief Nosnra and his band of hill giants. They were vulnerable because the werewolf lord now in charge of Sterich recalled their troops. This will probably make them lead their army of mercenaries in one of these two directions. So, I need to figure out how many troops Istvin can field, and the mass combat values of the inhabitants of the hill giant steading. Thanks to the ACKS rules, neither of these is a difficult thing. If they fight the giants in the field, there is plenty of stuff in the lower dungeons of the steading to slay unwary PCs. And that should set them up for G2 & G3. But they'll probably do something

Here's a neat article about Duolingo. I might try it.

Here's a neat article about Duolingo. I might try it. But this passage: CAPTCHA led to reCAPTCHA, which was bought by Google and is a fiendishly clever bit of stealth crowdsourcing. Instead of asking you to interpret just one block of blurry text, reCAPTCHA makes you do two. One is to prove you’re human. The other is a scrap of a scanned page from an old print newspaper article or book. By forcing users to type the text they see, Google has managed to digitize reams of content for its own library. Are you shitting me? Diabolical and brilliant. Kevin knows how to Kickstart. Look for this to be delivered early like Spears of the Dawn was. Originally shared by Kevin Crawford At this point, four more pages of material need to be buffed to pre-proof quality before Scarlet Heroes is ready for its February 1st Kickstarter debut. My artists are coming through with lightning alacrity- Eric Lofgren, Ian MacLean, David L. Johnson, Luigi Castellani, Earl Geier, Miguel Santos, Joyce Maureira, Nate Furman, and a special guest cartographer to be named later are delivering material on a near-daily basis. I hired a lot of artists. It took me a while to pick people who had b/w line art styles that complemented each other, but once I finally lined up the team, I was able to take advantage of their numbers and talent to get art at a breakneck pace. I use a simple slot roster system for organizing and tracking my art buys. Before I hire any artists, I lay out the book and identify the art slots I need and their exact dimensions and topic. Then I

Old Nerd Makes Toddler's Day

Image
Old Nerd Makes Toddler's Day Broadway Pizza has a train theme. Model trains circle tracks hanging from the ceiling. When my wife and kids come meet me for lunch that's where we go because Coop is a huge baby train nerd. He will totally behave because he can watch the trains while we eat.  Today we go in and a guy is there fixing one of the trains. These are big "O" scale trains (I think). Coop is nattering on about them. "Papa, big diesel. Couple up to cars." etc etc. The old guy fixing the diesel hears this and comes over and talks to us. He puts this big (probably $300+) Union Pacific model right in front of a two year old and lets him touch and play with it. He tells us how he installs the trains in all the Broadway Pizzas, how he loved trains when he was Coops age, where we could take Coop to see real trains, and was tickled that Coop knew all the terminology he did (thanks, Thomas the Tank Engine). This train guy was an old-school Gygaxian nerd. Sixtyis

I spent #yojoeday  yesterday in a semi-conscious flu-addled state, so I didn't even remember to put up a gallery. For shame. Well, I'm well enough to do it now.  Special Missions 8 This is an interesting issue. Larry Hama doesn't like the CIA. This issue introduces asshole agent Anderson. The CIA is having the Joes extract a defector from a nameless south-east Asian country. The defector, Portland, is taking some important computer chips to the Communists. If the Joes can't extract him, Low-Light is to take him out. An aside, Low-Light is one of my favorite Joes. He's the only Joe from North Dakota. His backstory is that he was a timid kid, afraid of the dark. He gets lost on a hunting trip and when they find him three weeks(!) later, he's smiling in the dark caressing his .22 rifle that he's been hunting with to survive. I wanted that to be me so bad. The Joes pass a village that is something out of "the Killing Fields," and have to deal with th

Earplugs for the old rockers

Earplugs for the old rockers Including Michael R and Mike McCarthy. I wore these earplugs to the Reverend Horton Heat show last night. They are effective! The Good *My hearing is completely normal today, no (extra) tinnitus. *I used the "medium" protection tubes. The volume of the show was at "loud car stereo where if you turned it up any more the speakers would start to crackle." *Sound quality was good. Everything was clear. I heard every instrument. I thought they were muting the vocals, but that was our position (on the rail with the vocals coming through the speakers above the crowd, so they were going right over us.) The Rev had extra vocal speakers on each side of the stage which solved that problem. *I could hear my buddy perfectly well even over the music and crowd. In fact, I could hear him better than he could hear me if I said something to him.  *They are comfortable. I wore them for about 3.5-4 hours and no soreness or anything. *Discreet. They go way i
